Texas Governor Greg Abbott has officially proclaimed April 2025 as Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, emphasizing the state’s commitment to combating sexual violence and supporting survivors.

The proclamation, announced by Governor Abbott, aims to raise awareness about sexual assault and honor the courage of survivors. According to Charlie Health, over 433,000 cases of sexual assault or rape occur annually among those over 12, with a sexual assault occurring roughly every 68 seconds.

“Every person is worthy of respect and protection, especially from acts of sexual violence,” Governor Abbott stated, highlighting the importance of this initiative in preventing such crimes and supporting those affected.

The Governor’s Sexual Assault Survivors’ Task Force (SASTF), established in 2019, continues to play a crucial role in providing a survivor-centered response to sexual violence. Texas has also committed to funding and supporting rape crisis centers, offering critical resources and advocacy for survivors.

Rose Luna, CEO of the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault, commended the state’s efforts, saying, “The support and resources provided to survivors across Texas are truly commendable.”

Despite these initiatives, challenges remain. Only about 310 out of every 1,000 sexual assaults are reported to the police, underscoring a significant underreporting issue. The mental health impacts on survivors are also substantial, with the majority developing some form of mental health problem.

To show support for survivors during April, Texans are encouraged to use the hashtag #SAAPM2025 on social media. Various awareness activities and community events are planned to promote understanding and participation.

Resources for survivors are available through the SASTF website, providing crucial information and support services.

As Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month approaches, Texas continues its commitment to creating a safer environment, honoring survivors, and raising awareness about these crimes. The state’s proactive approach illustrates its dedication to protecting its citizens and ensuring perpetrators are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
