Patriots Trade QB Joe Milton III to Cowboys for Draft Pick Upgrade

The New England Patriots have agreed to trade quarterback Joe Milton III and a 2025 seventh-round draft pick to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a 2025 fifth-round pick, as reported on April 3, 2025. This move addresses the Cowboys’ need for a backup quarterback while providing the Patriots with improved draft capital.

Milton, selected by the Patriots in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, made an impressive debut in the 2024 season finale. He completed 22 of 29 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for a score in a 23-16 victory over the Buffalo Bills.

“We’re excited to add Joe to our quarterback room,” said Mike McCarthy, head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. “His performance in his first NFL start showed promise, and we believe he’ll be a valuable asset behind Dak Prescott.”

The trade fills a crucial gap for the Cowboys, who were in need of a backup quarterback after Cooper Rush signed with the Baltimore Ravens. Milton’s acquisition provides depth and security for the Dallas offense, particularly given Prescott’s injury history.

For the Patriots, this move aligns with their rebuilding efforts under new leadership. By trading Milton, they’ve adjusted their quarterback depth chart, which now features starter Drake Maye and recently signed backup Joshua Dobbs.

“This trade allows us to maximize our draft capital and continue building for the future,” stated Jerod Mayo, head coach of the New England Patriots. “We appreciate Joe’s contributions and wish him the best in Dallas.”

Milton expressed enthusiasm about joining the Cowboys, a team he and his family have long supported. “It’s a dream come true to play for the Cowboys,” Milton said. “I’m looking forward to contributing to the team’s success in any way I can.”

As the 2025 NFL season approaches, both teams will look to capitalize on this trade. The Cowboys gain a promising young backup with potential for offensive packages, while the Patriots secure additional draft resources to further their roster reconstruction.
