Dallas Police Release Bodycam Footage of Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting Amid Mental Health Call

Must read

Dallas police have released body camera footage showing a fatal confrontation with a man who charged officers with a box cutter and attempted to grab an officer’s weapon — marking the third officer-involved shooting in the city this year.

The incident unfolded Sunday evening when officers responded to a mental health call at an apartment complex in the 5100 block of Lemmon Avenue around 7:30 p.m., according to authorities. What began as a routine call quickly escalated into a deadly confrontation that has once again put police use of force under scrutiny.

Disturbing Encounter Captured on Video

Police Chief Daniel Comeaux detailed how the situation deteriorated rapidly after officers arrived at the scene. The suspect initially answered the door holding a box cutter before slamming it shut. Through the closed door, the man could be heard making alarming statements.

“The suspect could be heard saying through the door, ‘Put away the Taser, I don’t want to f—— stab myself. I want to get shot,'” Comeaux explained during a press briefing.

Moments later, the situation took a dangerous turn. The man suddenly flung open the door and charged at officers while brandishing the box cutter. Body camera footage released by the department shows the chaotic seconds that followed, including the suspect’s attempt to reach for an officer’s firearm.

Officers fired multiple shots, striking the man in the upper torso. He was transported to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Third Officer-Involved Shooting This Year

Is this part of a troubling pattern? Sunday’s fatal encounter marks the third Dallas police officer-involved shooting in 2026 and the second such incident in February alone. The department has faced increasing pressure to be transparent about use-of-force incidents.

Initial reports confirmed that the incident occurred near the Dallas North Tollway, in an area not typically known for violent crime. The 911 call that brought officers to the scene specifically mentioned concerns about the individual’s mental health.

“Put the taser away. I don’t want to f***ing stab myself. I want to get shot,” the suspect had shouted through the door, according to statements from witnesses and audio captured on police equipment.

The department’s decision to quickly release body camera footage follows recent policy changes aimed at increasing transparency following several high-profile police shootings across the country. Chief Comeaux emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing.

Mental health advocates have renewed calls for expanded crisis intervention training for officers and greater availability of mental health professionals who can respond alongside police to similar situations — though it’s unclear whether such measures would have changed the outcome in this volatile confrontation where an officer’s weapon was allegedly targeted.

For Dallas police, the incident adds to a challenging start to 2026, with three officer-involved shootings already on record before the year’s first quarter has concluded.
