Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has secured his third victory against former Democratic gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke in an ongoing legal battle to revoke the charter of O’Rourke’s organization, Powered by People, according to a release from the Attorney General’s office.
The latest win comes after Paxton successfully challenged jurisdiction issues, allowing his office to move forward with efforts to dissolve the organization. “Beto’s attempt to wield his money-funneling organization as a weapon to derail the functioning of the Texas Legislature failed miserably, and we will prove that he broke the law along the way,” Paxton stated in an official release.
This victory is just the latest in a string of aggressive legal actions by Paxton, who has positioned himself as a staunch defender of conservative causes in Texas. His office has directed all Texas Independent School Districts not enjoined by litigation to display the Ten Commandments once Senate Bill 10 takes effect on September 1, 2025.
Legal Battles Against O’Rourke
The conflict between Paxton and O’Rourke intensified when the Attorney General appealed an El Paso court’s attempt to force him to be deposed at O’Rourke’s request. Paxton’s office also successfully appealed a court order that had advanced what they characterized as a “burdensome discovery request” related to jurisdictional issues involving Powered by People.
“Repeat loser Beto O’Rourke is attempting to weaponize our judicial system to target the OAG and me personally, but we will never back down,” said Paxton in his characteristically blunt style.
What’s behind this ongoing feud? The legal confrontation appears to be part of a broader political strategy by Paxton, who has sued the Biden Administration over 100 times and claims to have won the majority of those cases.
A Record of Conservative Legal Actions
Under Paxton’s leadership, the Texas Attorney General’s Office has taken on a wide range of issues aligned with conservative priorities. His office has successfully defended Texas voter ID laws and dismantled what they describe as an illegal vote harvesting scheme involving multiple individuals and corrupt officials.
In the realm of gender issues, Paxton blocked a Biden-era rule that would have forced the Texas foster care system to adopt what he terms “radical gender ideology” and has initiated legal actions against organizations like the NCAA and U.S. Masters Swimming over allowing transgender women to compete in women’s sports.
Paxton has also led efforts requiring public schools to bring back prayer in classrooms and to post the Ten Commandments, aligning with his interpretation of state law. On gun rights, he sued the Biden Administration’s ATF to block a rule reclassifying pistols with stabilizing braces as short-barreled rifles, framing it as a defense of Second Amendment rights.
Corporate Accountability and Public Safety
Beyond partisan battles, Paxton’s office has secured significant settlements against major corporations. Most notably, he obtained a $1.375 billion settlement with Google for data privacy violations — reportedly the highest recovery nationwide against Google for any attorney general’s enforcement of state privacy laws.
His office also secured a $7.4 billion nationwide settlement against Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family for their role in the opioid crisis. “Guided by my conviction to serve the people of Texas, I have never backed down from taking on the radical Left and the lunatics trying to destroy this country,” Paxton has said of his legal strategy.
The Attorney General’s office has created specialized units including the Human Trafficking and Transnational Organized Crime section and the Cold Case and Missing Persons Unit, which his office claims have helped solve decades-old homicides.
Abortion and Border Security
Paxton has been particularly active on abortion issues, successfully defending Texas’s pro-life laws including the Human Life Protection Act and Texas Heartbeat Act. His office also led efforts to defund Planned Parenthood and recover $10 million in Medicaid payments.
On immigration, Paxton has formally partnered with former President Donald Trump’s anticipated second term to assist in deportation efforts, should Trump win the upcoming election.
Critics argue that Paxton’s legal crusades represent a misuse of state resources for partisan political purposes, while supporters view them as necessary defenses of Texas values against federal overreach. Either way, the Attorney General shows no signs of slowing his aggressive legal strategy as his conflict with O’Rourke continues to unfold in Texas courts.
