The FBI has thwarted a major ISIS-linked terror plot in Michigan, arresting multiple suspects who allegedly possessed firearms and tactical gear intended for an attack on American soil, officials revealed Friday.
Federal agents conducted raids in Dearborn and Inkster, Michigan, following an investigation that began in an online chatroom and culminated in the arrest of five individuals, including minors as young as 16. The suspects were allegedly planning a violent attack just before Halloween weekend, according to documents revealed in a newly unsealed criminal complaint.
Weapons and Planning Materials Discovered
The arrests came after authorities discovered “multiple AR-15 rifles, tactical gear, and a detailed plan to carry out an attack,” federal officials confirmed. While the specific targets remain undisclosed, investigators believe the group was preparing for what could have been a devastating terrorist attack.
“With today’s unsealed criminal complaint, the American people can see the results of months of tireless investigative work where the FBI acted quickly and likely saved many lives,” said FBI Director Kash Patel, who praised the agents involved for their courageous response.
The suspects, ranging from 16 to 20 years old, were apprehended across Dearborn and neighboring communities in what authorities described as a carefully coordinated operation. Neighbors expressed shock at learning about the ISIS connection in their communities, with many telling reporters they had noticed nothing unusual before the raids.
How close did the plot come to execution? According to sources familiar with the investigation, the timing of the arrests was deliberately planned to prevent the group from moving forward with their attack during the Halloween weekend, when public gatherings would have provided potential targets. The suspects had allegedly acquired weapons and were in advanced stages of planning.
Coordinated Law Enforcement Response
The operation showcased the increasing concern about homegrown extremism and the role of online radicalization. Law enforcement officials described months of surveillance and intelligence gathering that ultimately led to the raids.
“FBI Detroit and its Joint Terrorism Task Force are relentless in ensuring the safety of the citizens of Michigan and beyond,” said a senior FBI official in a statement. “Defending the homeland will always be one of our top priorities, and we will utilize every federal resource to disrupt and dismantle any individuals or groups who threaten national security.”
The case highlights the ongoing threat posed by ISIS-inspired terrorism, even as the group has lost much of its territory in the Middle East. Extremist groups continue to use online platforms to spread propaganda and recruit followers, particularly targeting younger individuals who may be vulnerable to radicalization.
Authorities haven’t yet disclosed how the suspects allegedly became connected to ISIS or the extent of any direct communication with the terrorist organization. But the discovery of tactical gear alongside weapons suggests a level of preparation that has alarmed counterterrorism experts.
The investigation remains active, with additional details expected as the case moves through the judicial system. For now, communities in Wayne County are processing the unsettling revelation that a potential terrorist plot was developing in their midst — while law enforcement officials point to the case as evidence that the systems designed to detect such threats are working.
