Ohio State Holds CFP Top Spot as Big Ten, SEC Dominate Rankings
The Buckeyes aren’t budging. Ohio State maintained its grip on the No. 1 ranking in the latest College Football Playoff standings released Monday, continuing to lead a top-five completely dominated by Big Ten and SEC powerhouses.
The second week of CFP rankings showed minimal movement at the very top, with undefeated Ohio State (9-0) holding firm after games played through Saturday, November 8. The Buckeyes are joined by surprising Indiana (10-0) at No. 2, Texas A&M (9-0) at No. 3, and one-loss SEC titans Alabama (8-1) and Georgia (8-1) rounding out the top five, according to the official rankings.
Texas Tech, Ole Miss Shake Up Top 10
Just outside the elite five, Texas Tech made one of the week’s notable moves, climbing two spots to No. 6 after dismantling BYU in what the committee described as a “really convincing” victory. Ole Miss, meanwhile, slipped to No. 7 despite winning their game against Citadel — a reminder that in the committee’s eyes, not all wins are created equal.
The Hoosiers’ placement at No. 2 over the Aggies wasn’t without controversy. The decision apparently sparked the second-longest deliberation among committee members, who weighed both programs’ complete body of work.
“Certainly, discussion about those two games, but also discussion about body of work,” the committee noted. “There was conversation about Missouri. Missouri is a really good team but not the team they’ve been, due to injuries at quarterback.”
ACC’s Single-Team Problem
Remember when the ACC was a football powerhouse? The conference’s struggles were laid bare in these rankings, with Miami representing its only projected entry into the 12-team playoff field at No. 15. The Hurricanes’ positioning appears to rest almost entirely on their season-opening triumph over Notre Dame rather than recent performances.
“Certainly, the win versus Notre Dame was a key factor for placing Miami ahead of Georgia Tech,” the committee explained. “In general, with the ACC, I think their lack of nonconference signature wins other than Miami over Notre Dame hurts the conference.”
Group of Five Representation
What about the little guys? South Florida emerged as the highest-ranked Group of Five team at No. 24, currently projected to win the American Athletic Conference and secure the final automatic bid in the expanded playoff format.
The Bulls have shown remarkable consistency throughout the season, something that hasn’t gone unnoticed. “They’ve always been part of (the conversation),” committee members stated. “South Florida is the most consistent of the Group of 5, to date.”
The Road Ahead
These rankings, while significant, are still just a snapshot in time. Several crucial matchups remain that could dramatically reshape the landscape before the final 12-team playoff bracket is revealed on December 7.
The expanded playoff format will kick into high gear beginning December 19, with the championship game scheduled one month later, reports indicate. This gives teams on the bubble — and there are plenty — just a few more weeks to state their case.
For now, though, it’s the traditional powers flexing their muscles. The Big Ten and SEC’s dominance of the top five sends a clear message about where the committee sees the balance of power in college football — and which conferences have work to do before selection day arrives.
