SS Rajamouli’s “Varanasi”: Mahesh Babu & Priyanka Chopra Lead Epic Time-Travel Saga

Must read

Indian cinema titan SS Rajamouli has unveiled his most ambitious project yet — a sprawling time-travel epic titled “Varanasi” that promises to push the boundaries of Indian filmmaking to unprecedented heights.

The celebrated director announced the film at a grand event in Hyderabad on November 15, 2025, accompanied by a star-studded cast including Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran. “Here you go… VARANASI to the WORLD…” Rajamouli proclaimed to thunderous applause from thousands of fans who had gathered for what became one of the largest live fan events in Indian entertainment history.

A Dream Team Collaboration

The film marks the first-ever collaboration between Rajamouli and Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu, a partnership Indian cinema enthusiasts have been anticipating for years. Mahesh Babu, visibly moved at the event, called it “a once-in-a-lifetime project,” adding, “I will make everyone proud. The whole of India will be proud of us.”

Equally significant is the return of global icon Priyanka Chopra Jonas to Indian cinema in what’s being described as a powerful, action-oriented role named Mandakini. The addition of Malayalam cinema star Prithviraj Sukumaran rounds out what might be one of the most pan-Indian casts ever assembled for a single production.

Mythology Meets Modern Adventure

What exactly is “Varanasi” about? While plot details remain closely guarded, the film’s teaser — projected on a massive 130 ft x 100 ft screen at Ramoji Film City — revealed glimpses of an epic that blends time travel with elements of Hindu mythology.

Mahesh Babu appears to be playing a rugged explorer who embarks on a global adventure that somehow connects to ancient Indian civilizations. The teaser notably included a reference to “Tretayuga, Lanka Nagaram, 7200 BC” — a timeline that has already sparked debate among historians and mythology enthusiasts about its historical accuracy.

Is this Rajamouli’s boldest reimagining of Indian mythology yet? The director, who previously brought the “Baahubali” saga and “RRR” to global acclaim, seems intent on pushing even further into territory where ancient legends meet blockbuster entertainment.

A Global Cinematic Experience

Fans will need to exercise considerable patience, however. “Varanasi” isn’t scheduled to hit theaters until Sankranti 2027 — a traditional Indian festival that typically falls in January. Music director MM Keeravani has confirmed the summer 2027 timeframe, suggesting the film’s post-production requirements will be substantial.

The lengthy production schedule isn’t surprising given Rajamouli’s reputation for perfectionism and the film’s technical ambitions. “Varanasi” is being designed for IMAX exhibition, with the production team apparently developing new filming techniques specifically for the project.

Industry watchers note that the extended timeline also allows for global marketing campaigns that could position “Varanasi” as India’s biggest international cinema event yet. After the unexpected crossover success of “RRR” in Western markets, expectations for Rajamouli’s next venture couldn’t be higher.

For now, the ancient holy city that gives the film its name remains at the center of speculation — both as a physical setting and perhaps as a metaphorical gateway between past and present, myth and reality. Whatever shape “Varanasi” ultimately takes, Rajamouli seems determined to deliver what could be Indian cinema’s most ambitious export to date.
