Two National Guard members were gunned down Wednesday in what authorities are calling a “targeted ambush” just blocks from the White House, sending shockwaves through Washington’s security apparatus.
The FBI has determined the shooting of the West Virginia National Guard soldiers was not random but a pre-planned attack, according to officials briefed on the investigation. “FBI is calling this a targeted ambush. Uh, they say that this was pre-planned,” an official confirmed to reporters at the scene.
The brazen daylight attack occurred Wednesday afternoon in an area typically considered secure due to its proximity to the presidential residence. Both Guard members were rushed to area hospitals, though their conditions haven’t been disclosed.
Security Questions Mount
Why would National Guard members become targets in the nation’s capital? That’s the troubling question investigators are now racing to answer as they comb through surveillance footage and interview witnesses.
The shooting marks one of the most serious security incidents near the White House in recent years. National Guard units have been deployed to Washington, D.C. for various missions since 2020, including Capitol security and pandemic response efforts.
Law enforcement has established a perimeter around the crime scene as they gather evidence. The suspect — or suspects — remain at large, prompting heightened security throughout downtown Washington.
The West Virginia National Guard has not yet released the identities of the victims, pending notification of family members. A spokesman said they were on “authorized duty” at the time of the shooting.
Pattern of Targeting?
The pre-planned nature of the attack has raised alarms within security circles. “When you hear the words ‘targeted’ and ‘pre-planned’ from the FBI, that suggests a level of sophistication that’s deeply concerning,” said one former Secret Service agent who requested anonymity to speak candidly.
Wednesday’s shooting comes amid a period of heightened political tension nationwide. While no motive has been established, investigators will be looking at whether the soldiers were targeted specifically because of their military affiliation.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser called the incident “an attack on those who serve our country” and promised the city would provide whatever resources necessary to bring the perpetrators to justice.
For now, additional security personnel have been deployed throughout the federal district as the manhunt continues — a sobering reminder that even those trained to protect others can suddenly find themselves in the crosshairs.
