Brown University Shooting: 2 Dead, 9 Injured in Campus Tragedy

Must read

Tragedy struck Brown University on Saturday when a gunman opened fire during an economics review session, leaving two students dead and nine others injured in what officials are calling one of the most devastating incidents in the university’s history.

The shooting erupted at approximately 4:05 p.m. EST on December 13 in Room 166 of the Barus and Holley Building, where students had gathered for an introductory economics class review. The violence shattered the usual pre-finals quiet that typically blankets Ivy League campuses this time of year, transforming an ordinary study session into a scene of chaos and heartbreak that unfolded with terrifying speed.

“This is a deeply tragic day for Brown, our families and our local community,” the university president wrote in a statement that captured the stunned grief rippling through campus. By Sunday morning, authorities had lifted a shelter-in-place order after detaining a person of interest.

The Victims

Among the victims identified was Ella Cook, a student remembered by her community at Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham, Alabama as ‘incredibly grounded and generous and faithful’ and a ‘bright light’ — qualities now extinguished in senseless violence, according to those who knew her, as confirmed by family members.

The aftermath has left the campus community reeling. Of the nine injured, one student remains in critical condition, while seven others are listed as critical but stable. One student has been released from the hospital. All but three of the victims were students at the university, though officials haven’t yet released the identities of the second deceased victim.

“Everybody’s reeling, and we have a lot of recovery ahead of us,” a university spokesperson told reporters as families began arriving on campus Sunday morning, many still in shock.

Investigation Continues

How did this happen at one of America’s most prestigious universities? That’s the question investigators are now racing to answer as they piece together the events leading up to the shooting.

Authorities have remained tight-lipped about the person of interest in custody, declining to confirm whether the individual had any connection to the university. Law enforcement officials provided updates during a Sunday evening press conference, which was streamed live as anxious community members sought answers.

The university has canceled all classes and activities for the coming week. Counseling services have been expanded, with additional mental health professionals brought to campus to help students, faculty, and staff process the trauma.

For now, the Brown campus sits quiet and somber — a community frozen between the shock of what happened and the uncertainty of what comes next. Finals week, typically filled with stress over exams, has transformed into something far more profound: a community grappling with grief, searching for answers, and trying to imagine a path forward.
