Like father, like son? EJ Smith, the talented offspring of NFL legend Emmitt Smith, has officially declared for the 2026 NFL Draft after splitting his collegiate career between Stanford and Texas A&M.
The 5-foot-11, 211-pound running back has been described as “the total package” and “one of the best backs in America,” according to those who’ve watched his development over the years. While his statistics don’t quite match his father’s record-breaking numbers, the younger Smith has demonstrated versatility as both a rusher and receiver during his college career.
Stanford Beginnings
Smith began his collegiate journey at Stanford, where he appeared in 24 games over multiple seasons. During his Cardinal tenure, he accumulated 109 carries for 557 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns, averaging a respectable 5.1 yards per carry. He also proved his value in the passing game, hauling in 59 receptions for 386 yards and adding another touchdown through the air.
When named Stanford’s starting running back, Smith embraced the opportunity with humility. “It’s a great opportunity,” he remarked. “There’s been great running backs here in the past. Bryce, Christian and so forth. To be able to have that opportunity is a blessing.”
Transfer to Texas A&M
Looking for a fresh start, Smith eventually transferred to Texas A&M, where his most productive season came in 2023. That year, he recorded 53 carries for 218 rushing yards while showcasing his receiving skills with 33 catches for 242 yards across 12 games with the Aggies.
His final season in 2024 saw consistent but limited usage. Smith registered at least one carry in 11 of 12 games, with his best performance coming against New Mexico State when he rushed 15 times for 60 yards. His collegiate career concluded in the Las Vegas Bowl, where he managed 36 yards on just 5 carries, as documented in team statistics.
From High School Star to Draft Prospect
What kind of pedigree does Smith bring to the NFL draft? Before his college career, he was a standout at Jesuit College Prep in Dallas, earning recognition as a 4-star recruit. ESPN ranked him as the No. 48 overall prospect in the Class of 2020, setting high expectations that he’s worked to fulfill throughout his collegiate journey.
While his college production doesn’t match some of the eye-popping numbers put up by other draft prospects, scouts have noted his well-rounded skill set. Smith’s ability to contribute in both the running and passing games could make him an attractive option for NFL teams looking for versatility from the backfield.
As draft day approaches, the Smith name will undoubtedly attract attention. But for EJ, the challenge will be carving out his own legacy in a league where his father’s shadow looms large — 18,355 yards and 164 touchdowns large, to be exact.
