Sen. Slotkin Faces Federal Probe After Urging Troops to Refuse Illegal Orders

Must read

Sen. Elissa Slotkin revealed she is under federal investigation by the Trump administration for a video in which she urged military members to refuse illegal orders — a probe she characterizes as politically motivated intimidation.

The Michigan Democrat disclosed that U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s office in the District of Columbia has launched an inquiry into her participation in a November video featuring six individuals with military backgrounds. The video, which restated principles from the Uniform Code of Military Justice about rejecting unlawful commands, drew immediate fire from President Trump.

“This is Trump’s playbook, the facts don’t matter, and anyone who disagrees with him becomes an enemy,” Slotkin said in a video response. “And he then weaponizes the federal government against them. It’s legal intimidation and physical intimidation meant to get you to shut up.”

Safety Concerns Escalate Following Presidential Criticism

The consequences of the president’s attention have been severe. Slotkin reported receiving over 1,000 threats after Trump’s response, with more than 100 deemed credible enough to warrant investigation. The situation has forced her into round-the-clock protection by Capitol Police.

But the threats haven’t stopped at her doorstep. According to Slotkin, her parents’ home was “swatted” — targeted by a false emergency call designed to provoke an armed police response — and her siblings have required police protection. A bomb threat was also made against her residence.

“As a result of the president’s tweets, threats went through the roof,” she explained in her latest video statement.

The federal investigation itself came through unconventional channels. Prosecutors working under Pirro reportedly contacted Slotkin through an email to the Senate’s sergeant-at-arms requesting an interview with the senator and her counsel — a move that has raised eyebrows among legal observers familiar with DOJ protocols.

A Pattern of Targeting Critics?

Is this an isolated incident? Hardly. The investigation into Slotkin appears to be part of a broader pattern of actions against those involved in the video. Sen. Mark Kelly, another participant, faces a separate Pentagon investigation and has sued Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over attempts to reduce his military rank and pension.

Trump himself characterized the video as “seditious behavior” — though legal experts note that sedition is not actually a defined legal concept in U.S. law. More troublingly, the president suggested imprisonment or execution might be appropriate responses.

The timing of the investigation raises questions about political motivation. It comes shortly after Trump publicly criticized U.S. attorneys for not prosecuting his political enemies quickly enough, and Pirro’s office appears to have responded with this escalation.

Standing Firm Amid Pressure

Despite the investigation and threats, Slotkin has refused to back down. “This country is worth fighting for, our freedom of speech is worth fighting for,” she stated. “Our core values are worth fighting for. And right now, speaking out against the abuse of power is the most patriotic thing we can do.”

The senator, who previously served as a CIA analyst and Pentagon official, views the inquiry as a clear attempt at intimidation. It follows an earlier FBI counter-terrorism inquiry into the same matter.

Department of Justice policy typically prohibits investigations based solely on speech protected by the First Amendment — a point that has led some legal observers to question the legitimacy of the current probe.

“Right now, speaking out against the abuse of power is the most patriotic thing we can do,” Slotkin concluded, signaling that the administration’s pressure tactics have failed to silence her critique.
