Abbott Receives “Back the Blue” Award, Pledges Continued Support for Law Enforcement

Texas Governor Greg Abbott received the prestigious “Back the Blue” Award at the Dallas Police Department’s Assist the Officer Foundation’s 32nd annual Cops’ Cop banquet last week, cementing his reputation as one of the nation’s most pro-law enforcement governors.

The award ceremony, held in Dallas on January 20, 2026, brought together police officers, sheriffs, and border patrol representatives from across the state. “States and communities need law enforcement and leaders who are committed to the cause of the public safety,” Abbott told the crowd of uniformed officers and supporters. “You represent the very best of our great state, and Texas is better today because of what you do every day. I just want you to know you have a governor who has your back, and together, we will keep Texas safe and secure,” the governor declared.

Law Enforcement Leaders Rally Behind Governor

The event wasn’t just a celebration of Abbott’s policies but a gathering of Texas law enforcement leadership. Governor Abbott was joined by Assist the Officer Foundation Chairman and Dallas Police Department Sergeant Ed Lujan, Dallas Police Officer James Parnell, and numerous other law enforcement officials. CBS11 news reporter Amelia Mugavero served as emcee for the evening.

During his acceptance speech, Abbott highlighted his legislative achievements, particularly what he characterized as “the strongest bail reform package in Texas history,” designed to end what many officers have called a revolving door for violent criminals. These measures have been praised by police organizations across the state as essential tools for maintaining public safety.

Support for the governor’s policies appears widespread among law enforcement groups. Sergeant Victor Vela, first vice president of the El Paso Municipal Police Officer Association, expressed his organization’s backing of Abbott’s administration. “The EPM POA is grateful for the continued support Governor Abbott has shown to law enforcement and all first responders throughout the state of Texas,” Vela stated.

Border Security Remains Central Focus

Is there any issue more defining for Abbott’s relationship with law enforcement than border security? The governor’s aggressive border policies have made him both a lightning rod for criticism and a hero to many in uniform.

Paul Pettis, president of the National Border Patrol Council, offered perhaps the most emphatic endorsement of the evening. “If it weren’t for Governor Abbott, Texas would have been overrun,” Pettis remarked, underscoring the significance of state-level border enforcement efforts that have often put Texas at odds with federal authorities.

The governor’s focus on border security and law enforcement support has been a consistent theme in his public appearances. Just weeks before the award ceremony, Abbott appeared alongside Sheriff Waybourn in a brief video promoting his “Back the Blue” initiatives, further emphasizing his administration’s priorities. The January 7 appearance was captured in a YouTube short that circulated widely among law enforcement supporters.

For Abbott, whose political identity has become increasingly intertwined with law enforcement support, the award represents not just recognition of past efforts but a commitment to future policies. As Texas faces evolving challenges in public safety and border management, the governor’s close relationship with police organizations seems likely to remain a cornerstone of his administration — and a key talking point for supporters and critics alike.
