A U.S. citizen and ICU nurse was fatally shot by Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis Tuesday morning, igniting fresh controversy over federal law enforcement operations and marking the third such shooting in the city this month.
Alex Jeffrey Pretti, 37, was killed at approximately 9:05 a.m. CST at the intersection of 26th Street and Nicollet Avenue during what the Department of Homeland Security described as a “targeted operation” against an allegedly violent undocumented immigrant. According to officials, Pretti approached agents with a 9mm handgun and resisted attempts to disarm him.
“The officers attempted to disarm the suspect but the armed suspect violently resisted. More details on the armed struggle are forthcoming,” a DHS statement read. Officials claim an agent fired “defensive shots” after the confrontation escalated.
The shooting has raised serious questions about federal tactics and jurisdiction. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed that Pretti was a white Minneapolis resident and U.S. citizen with no prior criminal record who legally owned the firearm and possessed a valid permit to carry it.
Growing Pattern of Federal Force
Tuesday’s incident represents the third federal agent-involved shooting in Minneapolis since January 7, establishing what local officials describe as a troubling pattern of escalation by federal agencies operating in the city.
Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino defended the agency’s actions, describing the agent who fired as highly trained with eight years of service. He further claimed federal law enforcement officers are “under attack” in Minneapolis, suggesting a hostile environment for agents carrying out their duties.
Despite immediate medical aid rendered at the scene, Pretti was pronounced dead after being transported to Hennepin County Medical Center. The exact circumstances leading to his interaction with Border Patrol agents remain unclear.
What’s particularly striking about this case? The victim had no apparent connection to the Border Patrol’s stated target and was a healthcare worker with clean background.
Political Fallout Intensifies
The shooting has already triggered strong reactions from political leaders. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker issued a scathing condemnation, calling for unified action against what he characterized as federal overreach.
“Masked federal agents in Minnesota just shot and killed another person. We must put a stop to Trump’s ICE. Now,” Pritzker declared in a statement. “Stop the funding, stop the occupations, stop the killings. I am asking my fellow Republican and Democratic Governors across the nation to have a unified response. We must all stand against the lawlessness being inflicted in our states.”
Pretti, who was born in Illinois before relocating to Minneapolis, had been working as an ICU nurse — a detail that has further inflamed public sentiment around his killing.
Community protests have erupted near the shooting site, with demonstrators demanding transparency about the circumstances that led to Pretti’s death and questioning the increased presence of federal agents in Minneapolis neighborhoods.
As investigations continue, the incident highlights growing tensions between federal agencies, local authorities, and communities across the country — with Minneapolis once again finding itself at the center of a national conversation about law enforcement practices and accountability.
