Minnesota Man Impersonates FBI in Bizarre Prison Escape With Pizza Cutter

Must read

A Minnesota man’s apparent attempt to free a high-profile inmate with nothing more than a pizza cutter, fake FBI credentials, and dubious paperwork has landed him behind the same prison walls he tried to breach.

Mark Anderson, 36, of Mankato, Minnesota, was arrested on January 28, 2026, after he allegedly impersonated an FBI agent at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center in what authorities are calling an ill-conceived plot to free Luigi Mangione. According to court documents, Anderson arrived at the facility claiming to have judge-signed paperwork authorizing Mangione’s immediate release.

The bizarre jailbreak attempt unraveled quickly. When pressed for credentials, Anderson could only produce a Minnesota driver’s license rather than FBI identification, officials revealed. A subsequent search of his backpack yielded an unusual arsenal: a pizza cutter and barbecue fork.

Security footage shows Anderson approaching the jail intake at 6:50 p.m., where he boldly claimed to be an “FBI agent” with paperwork “signed by a judge” authorizing Mangione’s release. When his ruse failed, Anderson reportedly threw documents containing allegations against the U.S. Department of Justice at prison staff.

A Long Drive for a Failed Mission

What would drive someone to travel over 1,200 miles armed with kitchen utensils and false documents? Investigators are still piecing together Anderson’s motivation after he drove from Minnesota to New York for the attempt.

Bureau of Prisons officials immediately detained Anderson after he admitted to carrying weapons. The pizza cutter and barbecue fork — hardly standard issue for federal agents — were discovered during a routine security screening.

“This has to rank among the least sophisticated prison break attempts in recent memory,” said one law enforcement official who requested anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak publicly about the case. “Most people don’t show up with cooking implements to stage a jailbreak.”

Anderson now faces federal charges for impersonating a federal officer and attempting to aid in an escape. He’s expected to appear in Brooklyn federal court on Thursday, January 29, 2026.

Mangione Remains Behind Bars

Luigi Mangione, the apparent target of this unusual rescue attempt, remains detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center awaiting both federal and state trials. His federal case is scheduled for jury selection in September 2026, while the state trial could begin as early as July.

Legal experts note that a judge is expected to rule soon on death penalty eligibility and key evidentiary matters in Mangione’s case. The high-profile nature of his prosecution may have contributed to Anderson’s misguided rescue attempt.

Court records indicate that Anderson brought documents containing various claims against the Department of Justice, suggesting possible sovereign citizen beliefs or conspiracy theories may have motivated his actions.

As for Anderson, he now finds himself in the same facility he attempted to breach — though without his pizza cutter and with considerably less freedom than he had before his cross-country journey.
