Trump Administration Moves to End IRS Direct File Program for Free Tax Filing

Must read

The IRS has expanded its Direct File service, now offering free federal tax filing in 25 states for eligible taxpayers with simple returns. This permanent filing option allows individuals to complete their federal taxes directly with the IRS, bypassing paid preparation services.

The web-based platform supports various income types including W-2 wages and provides access to important tax benefits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit. Users can file from smartphones, tablets, or computers, with step-by-step guidance throughout the process.

Direct File represents a significant evolution from its initial pilot program, now covering more tax situations than before. The service has been enhanced to include support for Health Savings Account deductions, broadening its utility for many Americans with straightforward tax needs.

For taxpayers to use the service, JavaScript must be enabled in their browser. The system walks users through each step of preparing and filing their return, making the often complex process of tax filing more accessible to those without specialized knowledge.

The IRS reminds taxpayers that Direct File is just one of several free filing options available. Another notable alternative is IRS Free File, which provides access to free tax preparation software for taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $84,000 or less.

As tax season approaches, these free filing options represent the government’s ongoing efforts to simplify the tax filing process and reduce costs for millions of Americans with straightforward tax situations.
