Amazon Smoke Detector Recall 2026: 11,000 Alarms Pose Fire Danger

Must read

Thousands of smoke detectors sold on Amazon have been recalled due to a critical defect that could leave homes vulnerable to undetected fires — a sobering reminder that not all safety equipment actually keeps you safe.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced on February 12, 2026, that approximately 11,000 LShome Photoelectric 3-Pack Smoke Detector Fire Alarms are being pulled from the market. The reason? These devices might stay silent when they should be blaring, as their sensing threshold is set dangerously high, potentially failing to detect smoke during a fire emergency.

What makes this recall particularly concerning is the life-saving nature of the product itself. These alarms, which retailed for about $30, were sold exclusively on Amazon from February 2024 through December 2025, meaning they could be installed in thousands of homes right now, providing a false sense of security to unsuspecting families.

How to Identify the Recalled Units

The affected smoke detectors are fairly distinctive. They’re white and circular in shape, operating on a 9V battery with a light sound warning and test button. If you’ve purchased smoke detectors on Amazon recently, check the bottom of the unit for model number XG-7D04-KZ9Z and SKU CX-50YP-A5VN, as noted by consumer safety officials.

This isn’t just a minor quality control issue. The CPSC classifies this as a serious hazard that could result in injury or death — the ultimate price of a device that fails at its one job: warning occupants about fire.

Defective smoke alarms have been a recurring problem in consumer safety. Just last year, several other brands faced similar recalls, though none as extensive as this current LShome situation. The pattern suggests ongoing challenges with quality control in the budget smoke detector market, especially with online-only retailers.

“When it comes to life-saving equipment, the margin for error is zero,” said one fire safety expert who wasn’t authorized to speak on the specific recall but has reviewed similar cases. “A smoke detector that doesn’t detect smoke is worse than having no detector at all, because it gives people a false sense of security.”

Consumers who have purchased these units should immediately stop using them and contact the company for replacement options. The announcement didn’t specify whether refunds would be offered as an alternative to replacement.

Still, this recall highlights a growing concern about the quality of safety products sold through online marketplaces. Without physical inspection before purchase, consumers are particularly vulnerable to substandard safety equipment.

For now, if you’ve purchased smoke detectors on Amazon in the past two years, take a moment to check your ceilings. That quick glance might just save your life.
