Texas barbecue is taking to the skies, and it’s not just any barbecue — it’s Pecan Lodge, one of Dallas’ most celebrated smoke joints.
American Airlines announced it will begin serving the award-winning Texas barbecue on select flights from Dallas–Fort Worth to New York starting February 2026. The partnership comes as part of the airline’s centennial celebration, offering first-class passengers a taste of Texas at 30,000 feet.
BBQ at Altitude
Fancy some brisket between Dallas and Manhattan? Beginning in February, first-class travelers on American’s routes from DFW to LaGuardia and JFK will be able to preorder a Pecan Lodge barbecue platter featuring smoked brisket and sausage, paired with creamy mac and cheese, coleslaw, and the requisite pickles, onions, and barbecue sauce, according to TimeOut.
The following month, the menu will switch to a smoked chopped brisket sandwich, reports One Mile at a Time. Both options will be served alongside classic barbecue sides including roasted green beans and potato salad.
Rhonda Crawford, American’s SVP of Customer Experience Design and Strategy, emphasized the regional connection in a statement: “As we celebrate American’s centennial anniversary in 2026, we’re looking forward to delighting our customers in new ways that honor unique regional tastes, beginning right here in our home state through one of the most beloved barbecue restaurants in Texas. Our customers deserve nothing but the best, and Pecan Lodge is certainly that.”
Want to secure your high-altitude barbecue experience? Preorders will open January 11 for flights departing from February 11, notes View from the Wing.
A Texas Institution
Pecan Lodge isn’t just any barbecue joint. Since opening in Dallas’ Deep Ellum neighborhood, it has garnered a reputation as one of the state’s premier barbecue destinations, with lines often stretching around the block. The restaurant features traditional Central Texas-style barbecue, known for its slow-smoked brisket and sausages.
But how will barbecue translate to airline food? That’s the challenge American and Pecan Lodge are tackling together. The airline is positioning this partnership as part of a broader customer-experience upgrade ahead of its centennial year, indicates Live and Let’s Fly.
The meals will be available as preorder-only options for first-class passengers between Dallas–Fort Worth and New York area airports, including Newark, though some sources note Newark wasn’t explicitly mentioned in American’s release.
This isn’t the first time airlines have partnered with notable local restaurants. In fact, the move appears to follow a playbook similar to what Delta established when it began upgrading its in-flight catering with regional partnerships, according to industry observers.
The collaboration represents a growing trend of airlines leveraging local culinary favorites to differentiate their premium cabin offerings—though few foods are as quintessentially Texan as proper smoked brisket.
For New Yorkers flying home from the Lone Star State, it might just be the perfect way to take one last taste of Texas with them. Just don’t expect any wet wipes with that barbecue sauce.
