America’s 250th Birthday: Trump Declares 2026 the Year of School Choice

Must read

The Trump administration has officially declared 2026 as a “Year of Celebration and Rededication” to mark America’s 250th birthday, while simultaneously throwing its weight behind an expanded National School Choice Week slated for January 2026.

“NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim 2026 as a Year of Celebration and Rededication,” reads the presidential proclamation issued on January 29, 2026. The declaration comes as the nation prepares to commemorate two and a half centuries since declaring independence from Great Britain in 1776.

School Choice Takes Center Stage

Coinciding with this historic milestone, the administration is highlighting National School Choice Week (NSCW), which will run January 25-31, 2026. The annual event aims to inform parents about the full spectrum of K-12 education options available to their children, from traditional public schools to charter, magnet, private, online, and homeschooling alternatives, according to information published on National Today.

“During National School Choice Week, we celebrate how school choice has changed the lives of millions of students by empowering parents and families to choose a school or program that best meets their child’s needs,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon in a press release.

What’s different this time around? The Department of Education is marking the 16th anniversary of NSCW with a substantial $500 million investment in charter schools and other expansions during Trump’s second term, signaling a doubling down on school choice initiatives.

Growing Momentum

Since its inception in 2011, NSCW has hosted more than 270,000 events nationwide. The 2026 celebration will feature 55 flagship events organized by the nonpartisan National School Choice Awareness Foundation and Resource Center, as detailed on the official NSCW website.

One such event will be a student showcase on January 28, 2025, organized by Black Alabamians for Education. The showcase will bring together students from various educational backgrounds—public, charter, private, and homeschool—to participate in games and talent displays, according to the organization’s calendar.

The celebration isn’t limited to a handful of states. In Arizona alone, NSCW is partnering with 1,022 schools and organizations to promote educational options for the state’s 1.7 million school-age children, as shown on the NSCW state profile page.

Beyond Politics?

Despite its embrace by the Trump administration, organizers insist NSCW remains nonpartisan. The National School Choice Awareness Foundation, which has coordinated the week annually since 2011, emphasizes its nonpolitical approach to raising awareness about all learning environments, from traditional public schools to nontraditional options, according to the foundation’s website.

Still, the timing of the administration’s proclamation—linking school choice initiatives with America’s semiquincentennial celebration—suggests a strategic framing of educational freedom as fundamentally American.

The week-long celebration occurs during the last week of January each year, as confirmed by the National Day Calendar, placing it prominently at the start of each calendar year.

As America approaches its 250th birthday, the convergence of patriotic celebration with expanded educational choice options reflects the administration’s vision for the country’s future—one where traditional values meet modern educational flexibility, all wrapped in red, white, and blue.
