Apply Now: Texas Education Freedom Accounts Offer Up to $30,000 for School Choice

Must read

Texas will begin accepting applications for its new education savings account program next week, potentially reshaping how thousands of families approach schooling in the Lone Star State.

The Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) application portal opens February 4 at 9 a.m. and will remain available until March 17, 2026. Unlike some government programs that process applications as they arrive, TEFA will review all submissions after the portal closes, giving families a full six-week window to apply.

What’s at Stake?

A $1 billion pot of money awaits distribution in the program’s first year. TEFA, created through Senate Bill 2, aims to give parents more flexibility in how they educate their children by providing funds that can be used for various educational expenses outside the public school system.

“Families will get up to about 25 percent of their total funding on July 1 so that they can get ready for the school year, pay their initial costs, acquire curriculum, pay their tuition and fees at their school,” explained program administrators.

The funding structure varies significantly based on educational setting. Families sending children to private schools can receive up to $10,474 per student annually. That figure jumps to $30,000 for students with disabilities who have an Individualized Education Plan through their local school district. Homeschooling families will receive considerably less — up to $2,000 per student per year.

Who Qualifies?

Not everyone will be eligible. The program requires students to be U.S. citizens or lawful residents who would otherwise qualify to enroll in Texas public schools. Priority will be given to lower- to moderate-income families and children with special learning needs.

The application process itself has been designed for accessibility. It’s mobile-friendly and most families can complete it in under 15 minutes, according to officials. But don’t mistake simplicity for commitment — applying doesn’t lock families into using funds at any particular school.

More than 1,400 private schools and education providers across Texas have already registered to participate in the program, with that number growing daily.

How Will the Money Flow?

The state has built in verification steps to prevent fraud. After the initial July payment of approximately 25% of funds, officials will verify student enrollment in October before releasing another installment. A final verification in February precedes the spring disbursement.

What can families actually spend this money on? The list is extensive: tuition at participating private schools, tutoring services, online education programs, therapies for students with special needs, textbooks, instructional materials, uniforms, technology hardware and software, and even transportation to education providers.

Interestingly, unused funds don’t disappear at year’s end. Any money not spent may roll over for future years, provided the student remains eligible for the program.

Looking Ahead

While proponents celebrate TEFA as a victory for educational choice, critics have questioned whether the program diverts necessary resources from public schools. The billion-dollar initiative represents one of the largest school choice experiments in the country.

For families interested in applying, the portal will be accessible at EducationFreedom.Texas.Gov starting February 4. With the application window spanning just six weeks and significant funds at stake, education advocates are encouraging eligible families to mark their calendars and prepare necessary documentation well in advance.
