Two Bexar County Deputies Wounded, Suspect Dead After Domestic Disturbance Call
Two Bexar County deputies are in stable condition after being shot at close range during a domestic disturbance call Sunday morning that ended with the suspect dead, officials said.
The shooting occurred around 8:30 a.m. in the Timberwood Park area of far north Bexar County, where deputies responded to a home in the 700 block of Tecumseh Drive, according to authorities.
Forced Entry Leads to Confrontation
A 38-year-old Hispanic man had reportedly forced his way into a woman’s home, prompting her and her two children under 10 years old to flee to safety before deputies arrived, investigators said.
When deputies entered the residence, they confronted the suspect in what Sheriff Javier Salazar described as a “makeshift bedroom.” The man opened fire on the deputies from just 6 to 8 feet away, striking one in the hip and another in the hand.
“Two deputies were shot this morning. Both are in stable condition at UHS,” Salazar told reporters at the scene. “One deputy was struck in the hip and the other deputy was struck in the hand. Both through-and-through wounds. They were able to return fire. The suspect was struck twice in the upper body.”
Deputies Return Fire
Despite their injuries, the deputies managed to return fire, hitting the suspect twice in the upper body. The 38-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, confirmed Sheriff Salazar.
How did the situation escalate so quickly? The sheriff indicated the confrontation unfolded rapidly after deputies arrived, with little time for de-escalation before the suspect began shooting.
Salazar provided additional details during a press briefing at approximately 10:30 a.m., where he noted that both deputies sustained “through-and-through” wounds, meaning the bullets passed completely through their bodies without lodging in tissue or bone – a factor that may have contributed to their stable condition.
Investigation Continues
The incident occurred in the Timberwood Park neighborhood, which sits in far north Bexar County. Authorities remained at the scene throughout the morning processing evidence and interviewing witnesses, reported local media.
Domestic disturbance calls are notoriously dangerous for law enforcement officers, often involving heightened emotions and unpredictable circumstances. Sunday’s shooting underscores the risks officers face when responding to such situations.
The woman and her two children who fled the residence before deputies arrived were uninjured in the incident. Officials have not yet released the identity of the deceased suspect or detailed his relationship to the woman and children.
As the investigation unfolds, both injured deputies remain hospitalized but are expected to recover from their wounds – a small comfort in what could have been an even more tragic outcome on a quiet Sunday morning in suburban San Antonio.
