A burglar targeting vulnerable seniors at a Mesquite assisted living facility has police on high alert as they search for a suspect caught on surveillance footage. The man is linked to at least three break-ins at the Evergreen at Mesquite Senior Living Center, located near Interstate 30 and Northwest Drive.
In security footage released by authorities, the suspect is clearly visible moving through one of the victims’ apartments. “It’s a short video that depicts the male walking from a bedroom back into the main living area of an apartment. It appears to be a Black male, shorter hair, maybe a light, shorter beard, wearing an all-green jumpsuit and red, red gloves,” according to police descriptions.
Rising Property Crime Concerns
The targeting of seniors comes amid what appears to be a troubling pattern of residential burglaries in the area. Just last November, a homeowner in the 900 block of Mesquite took matters into their own hands and fired at burglary suspects who had entered their property.
While authorities haven’t confirmed whether the senior living center incidents are connected to other local property crimes, at least one individual was booked in neighboring Tarrant County earlier this year on habitation burglary charges.
Is this part of a larger criminal trend? The Mesquite Police Department has been tracking shifting patterns in theft crimes over recent years, with particular concern about internet marketplace transactions gone wrong.
“Don’t become a victim of opportunity. Selling to strangers in a secluded area is a recipe for a robbery, assault or worse,” police warned residents. The department noted that “about one in five of every theft is an internet-related transaction,” a dramatic increase from just two years prior when such crimes accounted for only about 5% of robberies in Mesquite.
Community Response
The burglaries at Evergreen have prompted increased security measures at the facility, though management declined to comment on specific changes to avoid compromising their effectiveness.
Local law enforcement has stepped up patrols in the area, and residents are being advised to ensure doors and windows remain locked, even during daytime hours. The department has also encouraged families with loved ones in senior facilities to check in regularly.
Meanwhile, the region’s focus on addressing property crimes has apparently created opportunities in the law enforcement sector. Currently, 44 Crime Scene Technician positions are available in nearby Frisco, suggesting a broader investment in crime investigation resources throughout the metropolitan area.
For the seniors at Evergreen, however, the issue isn’t about statistics or job openings – it’s about restored peace of mind. Until the suspect in the green jumpsuit is apprehended, many residents remain on edge, their sense of security in what should be their safe haven fundamentally shaken.
