Cedar Park Achieves Texas Grand Slam: Film, Music, Digital Media & Tourism Certifications

Must read

Cedar Park has just hit a grand slam in the Lone Star State’s business and culture arena, becoming only the third Texas community to earn all four “Friendly Texas” certifications — a distinction that officials say positions the city for significant economic growth and heightened visibility.

Governor Greg Abbott announced the achievement this week, congratulating the rapidly growing suburb north of Austin for completing what some are calling the “Texas Grand Slam” by securing certifications in Film, Music, Digital Media, and most recently, Tourism.

“Congratulations to the City of Cedar Park on earning all four ‘Friendly Texas’ certified community designations for film, music, digital media, and now tourism,” Abbott said in a statement. “These growing industries in our great state are essential to Texas’ booming economy.”

What’s Behind the Certifications?

The “Friendly Texas” programs, administered by various state agencies including the Texas Film Commission and Texas Music Office, aim to equip communities with tools to attract investment and foster growth in creative and tourism sectors. For Cedar Park, achieving all four designations represents years of coordinated effort to transform the city’s economic and cultural landscape.

Cedar Park Mayor Jim Penniman-Morin emphasized the significance of the tourism designation, which completed the city’s collection. “The travel and tourism industry plays a vital role in enhancing Cedar Park’s cultural vibrancy and economic prosperity,” he noted. “Earning the Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community designation strengthens our ability to attract visitors, stimulate local business growth, and promote Cedar Park as a destination.”

The city’s music certification, secured earlier this year, made it the 81st community in Texas to join what has become the first statewide Music Friendly Community Program in the nation. Since launching in 2016, the program has built an extensive network of certified communities committed to supporting the music industry’s growth.

And it’s no small economic matter. The Texas music industry alone generates over $31 billion in annual economic activity while supporting nearly 196,000 jobs across the state, according to figures highlighted by the Governor’s office.

Digital Media Pioneer

Perhaps most notably, Cedar Park was the first community in Texas to receive the Digital Media Friendly certification. Achieving this status required the city to establish an official digital media liaison, attend specialized workshops, register resources in the Texas Production Directory, and create an ambassador group advocating for digital media development.

“Through these efforts, Cedar Park is creating more jobs for Texans, supporting statewide digital media production efforts, connecting professionals who can share expertise, building up local businesses, and setting the community up for (even more!) success,” city officials explained in a blog post.

State Senator Pete Flores praised the city’s comprehensive approach. “This designation is a testament to Cedar Park’s commitment to welcoming visitors, supporting local businesses, and showcasing the vibrant spirit that makes our city so special,” he declared in his congratulatory remarks.

Community Impact

What does all this mean for residents? Beyond the economic benefits, city leaders suggest these certifications will enhance quality of life and community identity.

City Manager Brenda Eivens emphasized this dual benefit. “This designation reflects our ongoing efforts to create a welcoming environment for visitors while supporting local businesses and enhancing the quality of life for our residents,” she commented. “It’s a meaningful step forward in showcasing all that makes Cedar Park a vibrant and engaging destination.”

The governor has encouraged other communities across Texas to follow Cedar Park’s example. “I invite all Texas communities, large and small, to fully leverage the opportunities provided by our ‘Friendly Texas’ certified community programs,” Abbott urged.

With parks, a thriving music scene, sports venues like the H-E-B Center, and now the state’s formal recognition across all four creative and tourism sectors, Cedar Park appears positioned to capitalize on Texas’ broader economic momentum.

For a city that incorporated just over 50 years ago, the achievement marks another milestone in Cedar Park’s rapid evolution from sleepy suburb to economic and cultural destination in its own right.
