College Freshman Uses CPR Training to Save Dallas Man After Asthma Attack

Must read

A college freshman with dreams of becoming a NICU doctor put her CPR training to the test Tuesday night, potentially saving a stranger’s life on a Dallas street corner.

Emma Dilley, a pre-med biology major at Dallas Baptist University, was driving through Oak Lawn when she encountered an unconscious man near the intersection of Lemmon and Douglas Avenues. Without hesitation, the freshman jumped into action, performing CPR on the man who had collapsed after reporting an asthma attack to a bystander.

“I got on the scene and I checked his pulse, and it was very faint,” Dilley told FOX 4 News. “I actually thought he was dead when I got there, but I re-did the pulse, and it was just a very faint pulse.”

What makes the rescue even more remarkable? Dilley had learned CPR as a high school freshman but had never actually performed it on a person until that moment. Still, her training kicked in when it mattered most.

Critical Moments

According to witnesses, the man had flagged down a passerby complaining of an asthma attack before collapsing. His inhaler was found nearby. Dilley began chest compressions immediately upon arriving at the scene, with the man regaining consciousness during her second round of compressions.

“I figured I needed to put others before myself, and so I just hopped out and did CPR,” she explained to reporters.

First responders from Dallas Fire & Rescue arrived shortly after and transported the man to a local hospital. No updates on his condition were available as of press time.

When asked if she believed her actions made a difference, Dilley remained humble. “I think I did. I tried my best. But I’m just glad I was there to help and be there for him,” she said.

The incident serves as a powerful reminder of how CPR training — even years after certification — can become critical in unexpected moments. For Dilley, whose career aspirations include working with newborns in intensive care, Tuesday night offered an early glimpse of the life-saving role she hopes to play professionally.
