Conservative Activist Charlie Kirk Shot and Killed at Utah Event
Charlie Kirk, the influential co-founder of conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, was shot and killed Wednesday during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University. He was 31.
The shooting occurred during an event titled “The American Comeback Tour” where Kirk was participating in a debate-style format called “Prove Me Wrong.” Witnesses described a single gunshot that struck Kirk in the neck around 2:30 p.m. local time on September 10, 2025.
A Shocking Scene Captured on Video
Video footage from the event shows the moment the attack unfolded. Kirk was speaking into a handheld microphone while seated under a white tent when the shot rang out. Social media videos captured Kirk reaching toward his neck as blood visibly gushed from the wound, followed by panic as the crowd scattered.
Security officials have not yet identified or apprehended the suspected shooter. Orem Mayor David Young confirmed that a person initially taken into custody at the university was later ruled out as the suspect.
Trump Announces Death, Orders Flags at Half-Staff
President Donald Trump, a close political ally of Kirk’s, announced the activist’s death in a message on Truth Social. “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead,” Trump wrote. “No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us.”
The president went on to express condolences to Kirk’s wife, Erika, and their family. “Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”
Hours after the shooting, President Trump issued a formal proclamation ordering all U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff until sunset on September 14, 2025. The order applies to all federal buildings, military installations, naval vessels, and U.S. diplomatic facilities worldwide “as a mark of respect for the memory of Charlie Kirk.”
Political Figures Respond Across Party Lines
What began as calls for prayers quickly transformed into expressions of grief as news of Kirk’s death spread. Vice President JD Vance had earlier posted on X, “Say a prayer for Charlie Kirk, a genuinely good guy and a young father.”
Even political opponents condemned the violence. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stated on social media, “Political violence has absolutely no place in our nation. All Americans should pray for Charlie Kirk’s recovery and hold the entire UVU community in our hearts as they endure the trauma of this gun violence.”
A Rising Conservative Star
Kirk founded Turning Point USA in 2012 when he was just 18 years old. The organization quickly grew into a powerful conservative youth movement, reportedly raising tens of millions for Trump’s presidential campaigns. His influence extended beyond traditional activism into social media, podcasting, and regular appearances on Fox News.
At 31, Kirk leaves behind a wife and two children. His organization had become one of the most significant in mobilizing young conservative voters, with a presence on hundreds of college campuses nationwide.
The fatal shooting comes amid heightened concerns about political violence in America. Questions about security arrangements at the open-air campus event will likely face scrutiny as investigators work to identify the perpetrator.
Turning Point USA has not yet announced succession plans for the organization Kirk built from the ground up, though tributes from conservative figures have poured in, many describing him as irreplaceable in the movement he helped create.
