A Dallas firefighter is recovering at home after plunging through a second-floor balcony during an overnight blaze that destroyed multiple apartment units early Thursday morning.
The fire erupted around 12:30 a.m. at an apartment complex on Brockbank Drive, where emergency crews battled flames that ultimately gutted four units — three vacant and one occupied — before firefighters brought the situation under control around 2:30 a.m., officials confirmed.
During the operation, one firefighter crashed through a balcony while working to contain the fire. The first responder was transported to a local hospital with what were described as minor injuries and has since been released to recover at home, according to reports.
Resident Left with Nothing
For Orlen Martinez, who lived in the only occupied unit destroyed in the fire, the night turned into a nightmare that left him with nothing but uncertainty. “Let’s see if they help us because all my documents are lost and everything. I don’t know if they’re okay or not. They told us we could go in and check soon when everyone is gone,” Martinez told local media.
Adding to his troubles, Martinez suffered cuts on his feet from broken glass while evacuating the burning building.
What happens next for the displaced residents? Management at the apartment complex has reportedly accommodated Martinez and another resident affected by the blaze while they figure out their next steps.
Investigators haven’t yet determined what sparked the fire. The timing — in the middle of the night when most residents would be sleeping — raises concerns about how quickly the flames spread through the structure.
Three of the destroyed units were vacant, which may have contributed to how long the fire burned before being detected. By the time firefighters arrived, the blaze had already consumed significant portions of the building.
As dawn broke over the charred remains of the apartments, Martinez faced the grim reality that everything he owned — from essential documents to personal belongings — had been reduced to ashes in a matter of hours.
