Dallas I-30 Closure: Major Downtown Traffic Disruption This Weekend

Must read

Dallas commuters are about to face a major headache this weekend as a key section of Interstate 30 shuts down completely.

Starting Friday at 10 a.m., all main lanes of I-30 through Downtown Dallas — a stretch known locally as “The Canyon” — will close until 5 a.m. Monday as part of a massive, years-long construction project that’s reshaping one of the city’s critical transportation arteries, officials announced.

What’s closing?

The closure affects both eastbound and westbound lanes between Interstate 35E and the I-45/U.S. 75 interchange, essentially cutting off a main thoroughfare through the heart of downtown. The Texas Department of Transportation has advised that drivers use Spur 366 (Woodall Rogers Freeway) as the primary detour during the 67-hour shutdown.

This weekend’s closure is just one phase of the $888 million I-30 Canyon project, an extensive renovation effort that isn’t expected to reach completion until late 2030. The project aims to modernize the aging highway corridor that cuts through downtown Dallas, improving safety and traffic flow for the thousands of vehicles that traverse it daily.

“It’s going to be rough,” said a local delivery driver who passes through the corridor multiple times daily. “But I guess we’ve got to rip off the Band-Aid sometime.”

Plan ahead

Transportation officials are urging Dallas residents and visitors to plan alternate routes well in advance. The weekend closure begins at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 16, though some sources initially reported a later start time of 10 p.m. — creating some confusion among commuters.

Weekend warriors heading downtown for entertainment, dining, or events should expect significant delays and consider public transportation options where available. Businesses along the affected corridor are bracing for potential impacts as well.

The I-30 Canyon has long been a bottleneck for Dallas traffic, with its narrow lanes and outdated design contributing to regular congestion and safety concerns. The reconstruction project, while painful in the short term, promises substantial improvements to what has become one of the region’s most notorious traffic chokepoints.

Local traffic reporters have dubbed this the first major traffic disruption of 2024 in the metroplex, though it certainly won’t be the last as the project continues through the decade.

For those who absolutely must travel through downtown this weekend, patience will be the virtue of choice — along with a good navigation app and perhaps a playlist of calming music.
