Dallas Police Fatally Shoot Man With Box Cutter During Mental Health Call

Must read

A man was fatally shot by Dallas police Sunday night after charging at officers with a box cutter during a mental health call that escalated into a deadly confrontation.

Dallas Police Department officers responded to an apartment complex in the 5100 block of Lemmon Avenue just after 7:30 p.m. following reports of a man threatening self-harm with a weapon. What began as a mental wellness check quickly turned volatile when the individual allegedly lunged toward officers while wielding a box cutter and attempting to grab an officer’s firearm, according to authorities.

Before officers made entry, the situation showed clear warning signs of potential violence. “The suspect could be heard saying through the door, ‘Put away the Taser, I don’t want to f —— stab myself. I want to get shot,'” explained Comeaux, as detailed by local media. These statements suggest the individual may have been attempting to provoke a lethal response from officers.

Second Officer-Involved Shooting This Year

The confrontation ended when officers fired at the suspect, striking him in the upper torso after he reportedly charged at them. The wounded man was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died from his injuries.

This marks the second officer-involved shooting for the Dallas Police Department in 2026. The department is still processing a previous incident involving 18-year-old Tony Robinson, who was armed with a handgun during a bathroom disturbance earlier this year.

How will the department handle the scrutiny that inevitably follows such incidents? The investigation is still in its early stages, but police officials have already begun their standard review process.

Major Nathan Sireers of the Dallas Police Criminal Investigations Group addressed the media following the incident. “I will provide you with the details as we currently know them regarding the officer involved shooting that occurred on February 2nd, 2026,” Sireers stated during a press briefing, promising transparency throughout the investigation process.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. Meanwhile, the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave — standard procedure following deadly force incidents while internal investigations are conducted.

Mental health advocates continue to push for expanded crisis response teams that pair officers with mental health professionals, arguing that specialized training might prevent some of these deadly confrontations. But for the man on Lemmon Avenue, that debate comes too late.
