Dallas Weather Alert: MLK Weekend Brings Strong Winds & Fire Risk

Must read

Strong winds and elevated fire risks are sweeping through Dallas as North Texans brace for a rollercoaster of weather conditions heading into the MLK holiday weekend, with officials urging residents to exercise caution.

A Wind Advisory remains in effect until noon Friday with gusts up to 40 mph whipping across the region, creating what meteorologists describe as an elevated fire threat throughout the afternoon. The combination of northwest winds between 15 to 25 mph and humidity levels plummeting into the teens has fire officials on high alert.

Weekend Weather Whiplash

After Friday’s windy conditions with highs near 61°F, Dallas residents should prepare for a significant temperature drop. Saturday will bring highs only in the 40s with wind chills making it feel like the 30s — a sharp contrast to the unseasonably warm temperatures North Texas experienced just weeks ago when New Year’s Day saw temperatures in the lower 70s, about 15 degrees above average.

“The weather in Dallas looks to be a mix of clouds and sun in the coming days, with temperatures ranging from the mid-30s to the mid-60s,” according to a local weather forecast.

Sunday will start frigid with lows dipping into the 20s before rebounding to the mid-50s by afternoon, according to the National Weather Service’s detailed prediction. The agency calls for sunny skies on Sunday with a high near 58°F, offering a brief respite from the chill.

MLK Day Outlook

Looking for plans this holiday weekend? Monday’s forecast calls for mostly sunny conditions with highs in the mid-50s, making outdoor commemorations and activities possible, if still a bit brisk.

This winter’s temperature swings have become something of a pattern for the region. AccuWeather’s monthly outlook for February shows Dallas experiencing similar volatility, with daily highs and lows projected to range anywhere from 51°F to 72°F.

And what about those planning ahead for spring travel to Dallas? The city’s weather in May 2026 is expected to be considerably more comfortable. “The temperatures in Dallas in May are comfortable with low of 18°C and high up to 28°C,” according to long-range projections, which also suggest between 8 to 15 rainy days during the month.

For now, though, Dallas residents would be wise to keep both jackets and sunglasses handy — sometimes within the same day — as winter’s unpredictable pattern continues to challenge even the most seasoned weather watchers.
