Fort Worth’s I-35W has become a deadly corridor in recent years, with a string of truck crashes leaving several dead and causing major traffic disruptions across one of Texas’s busiest highways.
The most recent incident occurred Monday night when the driver of a pickup truck was killed after striking the rear of a tractor-trailer on northbound I-35 in Fort Worth. The crash happened just after 9 p.m. at the ramp connecting I-35W to U.S. Highway 287, forcing authorities to close all northbound lanes for several hours as they investigated the scene, according to local reports.
Pattern of Deadly Crashes
This fatal collision marks just the latest in a troubling pattern of truck-related accidents on this stretch of interstate. In February, a semi-truck rollover blocked I-35W for hours after the vehicle hit a concrete wall, creating significant traffic backups throughout Fort Worth, as footage of the aftermath revealed.
Perhaps most devastating was last year’s multi-vehicle pileup involving at least 133 vehicles, including a FedEx truck and more than a dozen 18-wheelers. “A sixth person has died following yesterday morning’s horrific multi-vehicle pileup along Interstate 35 West in Fort Worth, Texas,” according to legal sources tracking the incident. The massive crash was attributed to icy conditions from a winter storm that swept through the region.
What’s behind this dangerous stretch of highway? Transportation experts point to a combination of high traffic volume, construction zones, and the corridor’s role as a major trucking route connecting Dallas-Fort Worth to other parts of the state.
Medical Emergency Leads to Wrong-Way Crash
In another incident, a truck driver believed to have experienced a medical emergency crashed late Sunday after driving the wrong way on an I-35W service road in south Fort Worth. Authorities indicated the driver likely lost control due to a health issue before the collision.
The stretch has also seen crashes resulting in multiple injuries. One recent accident on I-35W left one person trapped in a vehicle and ultimately resulted in a fatality after victims were transported to a local hospital, as documented by local media.
Fort Worth Police Department spokesperson Sergeant Carlos Martinez told reporters at Monday’s crash site, “We continue to urge drivers to exercise extreme caution on I-35W, especially during evening hours when visibility can be compromised.”
The Texas Department of Transportation has reportedly begun a safety review of the corridor, though specifics of potential improvements remain unclear. Meanwhile, local trucking companies have started implementing additional safety training focused specifically on navigating this problematic stretch.
For now, the highway that serves as a crucial artery for both commuters and commercial traffic continues to present dangers that have local residents increasingly concerned about their daily drives.
