Denison Earns Tourism Friendly Texas Certification, Joining Elite Group of Destination Communities

The small North Texas city known for its charming downtown and lakeside appeal just added another feather to its tourism cap.

Governor Greg Abbott announced on December 15, 2025, that Denison has officially been designated a Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community by Travel Texas, marking a significant milestone for the city’s growing visitor economy. The certification comes after Denison completed a rigorous multi-step process designed to enhance tourism infrastructure and hospitality standards.

“Tourism is critical to both our local and state economies,” said Governor Abbott. “Travelers to and within Texas generate almost $200 billion in annual economic impact and support 1.3 million jobs across the state. I congratulate the City of Denison and Discover Denison on earning this designation.”

Triple Crown of Texas Tourism

What makes this achievement particularly noteworthy? With this latest certification, Denison now holds the distinction of being certified in all three major Texas tourism programs – Film Friendly Texas, Music Friendly Texas, and Tourism Friendly Texas. It’s a rare trifecta that positions the city to attract diverse visitor segments.

The Tourism Friendly Texas program isn’t just another bureaucratic hoop. According to program guidelines, it’s specifically designed to strengthen relationships between local tourism entities and state agencies, while educating community leaders on tourism’s economic importance. The initiative particularly aims to assist small and rural communities in developing sustainable tourism economies.

Representative Shelley Luther emphasized the certification’s deeper significance: “This certification isn’t just an accolade; it’s a powerful affirmation of the heart and hustle of our residents, who pour their passion into preserving our heritage while inviting the world to experience the magic of Denison,” she stated.

Lakes, History, and Downtown Charm

For those unfamiliar with Denison’s appeal, the city offers a blend of natural beauty and small-town Texas charm. Situated near Lake Texoma, one of the largest reservoirs in Texas, the city attracts boating and fishing enthusiasts year-round. But its historic downtown, with tree-lined streets and preserved architecture, has become an increasingly powerful draw for day-trippers and weekend visitors.

Denison Mayor Robert Crawley highlighted this diverse appeal in his response to the certification: “Denison’s story has always been one of resilience, hospitality, and Texas pride,” he said. “Earning the Tourism Friendly Texas certification reflects the work our community puts into creating a city that people want to visit and return to time and again. From our award-winning downtown to Lake Texoma and everything in between, Denison offers something unique for everyone.”

The city is also one of just 90 official Main Street programs in Texas, a designation that has helped fuel downtown revitalization efforts. These programs focus specifically on preserving and enhancing historic commercial districts while driving economic development through tourism and local engagement, records show.

Tourism as Economic Driver

Behind the celebratory tone lies a serious economic strategy. Tourism development has become increasingly central to economic planning for small and mid-sized Texas communities facing changing economic landscapes.

Travel Texas, the state’s tourism marketing organization, has a clear mission: market Texas as a premier travel destination, generate non-Texan travel, and create revenue and jobs for local communities. The certification program aligns communities with these broader state goals.

Can tourism really make a difference in a city’s economic fortunes? The numbers suggest it can. With tourism generating nearly $200 billion annually across Texas and supporting 1.3 million jobs, communities that successfully position themselves as destinations stand to capture meaningful economic benefits.

Denison Tourism Manager Jordan Starr explained the certification’s practical impact: “It’s a milestone that reflects our commitment to thoughtful tourism development and shows that when visitors thrive, our hometown thrives too. Denison isn’t just open for tourists — it’s ready for them, with award-winning downtown charm, outdoor adventure, and genuine local hospitality that we’re excited to share with everyone who visits us.”

The governor has encouraged other Texas communities to pursue similar certification, noting in his statement that the program is available to help “further grow local tourism and jobs across our great state.”

For now, Denison joins a select group of Texas communities that have formally aligned their tourism development with state standards — positioning this North Texas city to welcome visitors with not just Texas-sized hospitality, but the official certification to prove it.
