DFW Airport Expects Record Holiday Crowds: Tips for Surviving 5M Travelers

Must read

DFW Airport braces for record-breaking holiday travel as nearly 5 million passengers expected to stream through terminals between now and early January, with officials predicting two days will hit a staggering 265,000 travelers each.

The Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport has announced a projected 3.2% increase in passenger traffic during this year’s extended holiday period from December 18 through January 6, 2026. Airport officials confirmed the surge is attributed to both seasonal travel and ongoing construction projects that have altered some terminal access points.

Peak Days and Passenger Projections

December 19 and December 28 are expected to be the busiest travel days, with each potentially handling more than 265,000 passengers in a single day. The final day of the year is looking equally chaotic, with December 31 also projected to reach the 265,000 passenger mark.

“This is a little busier than I expected,” traveler David Clayton told reporters as he navigated the growing crowds. Fellow passenger Bryce Chappell echoed the sentiment: “The line is definitely a lot greater than I thought it would be.”

Unlike the concentrated crush of Thanksgiving travel, holiday traffic this season is more distributed across several weeks. DFW Airport spokesman Rob Himler explained that the airport has been proactively preparing for the influx: “Over the winter holiday, the traffic is much more spread out over the several weeks that the holiday travel period is. From Thanksgiving, we have implemented a few things. First, today we opened the right-hand exit to Terminal A from International Parkway, which is part of our International Parkway project. And we did that ahead of schedule, so over 20 days ahead of schedule, thanks to collaboration with our partners and construction crews out there working really hard.”

Security Wait Times Fluctuating

Wondering how long you’ll be standing in line? TSA checkpoint wait times have been swinging dramatically throughout the day. On Christmas Day alone, security lines ranged from nearly 27 minutes during the midday rush to virtually no wait at all during late evening hours.

The data showed peak wait times of 26.8 minutes between noon and 1 p.m., while travelers passing through between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. essentially walked straight through with wait times recorded at 0.0 minutes.

Some travelers have been pleasantly surprised by efficient processing despite the crowds. “Right now, it seems to be going smoothly. I’ve been checking my app. Okay, what’s the wait time? They all seem to be 10 minutes or under, but we haven’t got through security yet. So, we’ll see if that’s true or not,” Patricia Lira remarked while waiting to pass through security.

Still, airport officials recommend arriving at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international departures, particularly during morning and afternoon peak periods.

Construction Impact

The holiday rush comes amid significant construction projects that have altered some traffic patterns around the airport. The early completion of the Terminal A exit from International Parkway has provided some relief, opening more than 20 days ahead of schedule.

That said, travelers should still plan for potential delays both inside and outside the terminals, as construction continues to affect some access routes and parking areas throughout the holiday season.

For those still planning to fly through DFW in the coming days, the message is clear: the record-breaking passenger numbers aren’t going to subside until well after the New Year’s celebrations fade. Nearly 5 million travelers in a three-week span means one thing above all — patience may be your most valuable carry-on item this holiday season.
