DFW Airport Braces for Record Holiday Travel: Nearly 5 Million Passengers Expected
Holiday travelers passing through Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport this season might want to pack an extra dose of patience alongside their gifts. The nation’s second-busiest airport anticipates a 3.2% surge in passenger traffic during the extended winter holiday period from December 18 to January 6, 2025, with nearly 5 million travelers expected to navigate its sprawling terminals.
The projected increase comes as the airport continues to manage ongoing construction projects while implementing new measures to ease congestion. “Over the winter holiday, the traffic is much more spread out over the several weeks that the holiday travel period is. From Thanksgiving, we have implemented a few things. First, today we opened the right-hand exit to Terminal A from International Parkway, which is part of our International Parkway project. And we did that ahead of schedule, so over 20 days ahead of schedule, thanks to collaboration with our partners and construction crews out there working really hard,” DFW Airport spokesman Rob Himler told FOX 4 on Friday.
Peak Travel Days and Security Wait Times
Looking to avoid the worst of the crowds? The airport has identified December 19-22 and December 26-28 as peak travel days when terminals will likely be at their busiest. This follows a pattern similar to last year, when DFW handled nearly 3.6 million holiday travelers in December 2024, with over a quarter of flights experiencing delays and about 2% facing cancellations.
Security wait times vary dramatically throughout the day. Early birds catching 2-3 a.m. flights might breeze through with virtually no wait, while evening travelers between 8-9 p.m. could face average waits approaching 35 minutes, according to data from Way.com. The good news? The average security checkpoint wait last December was just 9 minutes — though that’s little comfort if you happen to hit a peak period.
Savvy travelers can stay ahead of the game by checking real-time security wait information. DFW offers an interactive map with live wait times for each checkpoint on its website, allowing passengers to strategically choose their entry point based on current conditions.
Expedited Security Options
Dreading those security lines? There are options. TSA PreCheck is available in Terminals A, C, D, and E, while CLEAR expedited security is offered in Terminal E18, according to the airport’s holiday travel guidance. These services can significantly cut wait times, particularly during the busiest travel days.
The recent infrastructure improvements, including the ahead-of-schedule opening of the Terminal A exit from International Parkway, represent part of DFW’s ongoing efforts to manage increased passenger volumes while maintaining construction progress. But will it be enough to prevent the gridlock that has plagued holiday seasons past?
Travelers might find some relief in the fact that winter holiday traffic tends to be “more spread out” than the concentrated crush seen during Thanksgiving, as Himler noted. Still, with flight delays affecting more than a quarter of December 2024 flights, passengers would be wise to build buffer time into their travel plans.
For those navigating DFW this holiday season, the Dallas Express recommends checking the airport’s digital resources before heading to the terminal, as security wait times can vary significantly not only by time of day but also between terminals.
As millions prepare to pass through DFW’s gates in the coming weeks, the true test of the airport’s preparations lies ahead — whether those nearly 5 million travelers will be celebrating smooth journeys or posting delay horror stories to social media remains to be seen.
