Duck Hunters Rescued After Boat Sinks in Rough Cedar Creek Lake Waters

Must read

Two duck hunters found themselves in a harrowing battle against the elements Sunday morning after their boat sank in Cedar Creek Lake, leaving them stranded in frigid 56-degree water for approximately 90 minutes before rescue arrived.

The Gun Barrel City Fire Department deployed their Rescue Boat 1 to locate the adult male hunters, who were eventually transported to UT Health East Texas in Cedar Creek for medical evaluation. Officials attribute the boat’s sinking to unusually rough conditions on the lake, with high winds creating dangerous water chop.

“I am very proud of how all of the agencies worked together today to rescue the duck hunters and safely return them to their families,” said Gun Barrel City Assistant Fire Chief Jason Raney. “The conditions on the lake, with high winds and rough water, made this a very dangerous rescue for the personnel aboard Rescue Boat 1.”

Dangerous Conditions Challenge Rescuers

What began as a routine hunting expedition quickly turned into a life-threatening emergency. The hunters’ vessel began taking on water amid deteriorating lake conditions, as confirmed by local authorities.

The incident remains under investigation by Texas Game Wardens, who haven’t yet released details about what specific factors may have contributed to the boat’s failure. Fortunately, no injuries to first responders were reported during the rescue operation.

This isn’t the first time Cedar Creek Lake’s conditions have turned treacherous with little warning. The large body of water, spanning approximately 32,000 acres, can develop dangerous swells when high winds sweep across its surface — a particular hazard for smaller watercraft.

Local emergency officials stressed that the coordinated response between agencies likely prevented a tragic outcome. The hunters had been exposed to potentially hypothermia-inducing conditions for well over an hour before rescuers located them.

“Due to the high winds and rough water, a duck hunting boat was taking in water,” noted one official statement about the incident.

The rescue serves as a stark reminder for outdoor enthusiasts about the importance of weather awareness and safety equipment when venturing onto lakes, even for experienced hunters and boaters who might consider themselves familiar with local conditions.
