The FBI has intensified its search for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, mother of NBC’s Savannah Guthrie, after evidence emerged suggesting she was abducted from her Arizona home earlier this month.
Guthrie was reported missing on February 1, 2026, from her residence in Catalina Foothills, Arizona, with Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos confirming that evidence at the scene indicated she had been taken against her will. The disappearance has triggered a multi-agency investigation involving local authorities and federal agents.
Armed Suspect Caught on Camera
In a significant development, the FBI on February 10 released still images captured by a video-doorbell camera showing an armed individual wearing a mask and carrying a backpack on Guthrie’s property at the time of her disappearance. Federal investigators have developed a suspect profile, estimating the individual to be approximately 5’9″ to 5’10” with an average build.
“This is a targeted kidnapping,” noted former FBI officials familiar with similar cases. “That person didn’t just show up there that day and wonder, geez, will she be here?”
The chilling suggestion? Whoever took Guthrie likely had prior knowledge of her and her home.
Backpack Becomes Key Evidence
A single backpack has emerged as a critical focal point in the investigation, prompting federal authorities to examine Walmart sales records and store surveillance footage. Investigators are working closely with Walmart’s corporate security team while canvassing stores across the Tucson metropolitan area.
Authorities are urging residents within a two-mile radius of Nancy’s home to review any surveillance footage from January 1st to February 2nd that might help identify the suspect or provide additional leads.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the recovery of several items of evidence, including gloves found approximately two miles away from Guthrie’s home. These items are currently undergoing forensic analysis, though officials haven’t commented on whether they’ve yielded actionable information.
Ransom Demands Complicate Investigation
What’s further complicating the case? Multiple ransom notes demanding cryptocurrency payments have been received, with two payment deadlines having already passed by February 9. Authorities haven’t disclosed whether the Guthrie family has attempted to comply with these demands or if they’ve established communication with the alleged kidnappers.
The case has drawn national attention not only because of the troubling circumstances surrounding the abduction but also due to Nancy Guthrie’s connection to NBC News journalist and Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie.
As the investigation enters its second week, the community remains on high alert while investigators pursue what they hope will be breakthrough evidence in the search for the 84-year-old mother of three.
