A 17-year-old high school senior with college aspirations was killed Monday afternoon during a shooting at a Fort Worth park, marking a tragic end to what began as a gathering among teenagers and young adults.
Cyanna Boone, who attended Dunbar High School, was fatally shot at Historic Stop Six Park after a gathering of 15-20 people escalated into a physical confrontation, according to police. “She was getting ready to go to college. She was very smart. We are just trying to figure out why they shot her,” a family member told CBS News.
Second Victim Found Nearby
The violence didn’t end with Boone. A second victim was discovered with gunshot wounds in a parked vehicle just blocks away on Handley Drive. That person was rushed to a hospital but was later pronounced dead, Fort Worth police confirmed.
Officers were already in the vicinity when the shooting occurred — responding to an unrelated call around 2:13 p.m. when they heard gunshots coming from the 1500 block of Liberty Street. By the time they arrived at the park, the situation had already turned deadly, investigators said.
What makes this tragedy particularly heartbreaking? Boone wasn’t just any student. She was on track to graduate in May with both her high school diploma and an associate’s degree, putting her ahead of many of her peers as she prepared for her future. “Her family says she was set to graduate in May from Dunbar High School with an associate’s degree,” according to a news report shared by loved ones.
Violence Continues in Fort Worth Parks
The shooting at Historic Stop Six Park isn’t an isolated incident. Late Thursday night, Fort Worth police responded to yet another park shooting — this time at Springdale Park, where officers discovered a man who had been fatally shot. The suspect or suspects in that case remain unidentified, authorities indicated.
These incidents raise serious questions about safety in the city’s public spaces, particularly as warmer weather approaches and more residents utilize outdoor recreational areas.
For the family of Cyanna Boone, there are no easy answers — only the painful reality of a promising young life cut tragically short, just weeks before what should have been a celebration of her academic achievements and bright future.
