Frisco Triathlon Club Cyclists Killed in Denton County Hit-and-Run Tragedy

Must read

Two cyclists from the Frisco Triathlon Club were killed Saturday morning when a driver struck them on a rural Denton County road, leaving the tight-knit athletic community reeling from the sudden loss.

Scott Mages and Andre Kocher were riding along FM 455 East near Fritcher Road around 8:30 a.m. when the collision occurred, according to authorities who confirmed both men died from their injuries despite emergency medical response.

One victim was transported by ambulance to Methodist Celina Hospital where he was pronounced dead, while the second was airlifted to Medical City Plano but couldn’t be saved, officials stated.

In a troubling development, investigators noted the driver initially left the scene before eventually returning. The circumstances surrounding the driver’s actions remain under investigation, with authorities yet to announce any charges.

A Community Shattered

Tommy Johnson, who regularly rode with the victims but missed Saturday’s outing due to work commitments, described the moment he learned about the tragedy. “I thought, well, he’ll probably just be out for a few months. He probably won’t be able to do the Little Elm race or something like that, and you know, he’ll be fine,” Johnson recalled. “And then a few minutes later, a friend texted that they both passed away. It is just a shock… just numb.”

The deaths highlight the persistent dangers faced by cyclists who share roadways with motor vehicles. Johnson reflected on this vulnerability, noting, “There’s lots of things we do to try to be safe for sure, but we’re always at the mercy of the motorists.”

How can cyclists protect themselves? It’s a question that haunts many in the community, even as they follow safety protocols and ride in groups, as Mages and Kocher were doing on Saturday morning.

Remembering Through Activity

The Frisco Triathlon Club isn’t canceling its planned activities in the wake of the tragedy. Instead, they’re moving forward with a Christmas Eve “Santa Run” scheduled for 8 a.m. Wednesday at Frisco Running Company on Legacy Drive. The event, which includes both 5K and 1-mile options, encourages participants to wear festive attire like Santa hats, the club announced.

For many in the triathlon community, continuing to participate in these activities serves as both tribute and therapy — a way to process grief while honoring fallen members who shared their passion for the sport.

As cyclists across North Texas absorb news of this tragedy, many are left to reckon with the stark reality that Johnson articulated: no matter how many precautions they take, their safety ultimately depends on drivers sharing the road responsibly.
