Governor Abbott Appoints Amy Blanchett to Calhoun Port Authority Board

Must read

Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Amy Blanchett to serve on the Board of the Calhoun Port Authority, adding another civic role to her already extensive community involvement across the coastal region.

The appointment, announced by the governor’s office, will place Blanchett in the at-large commissioner position until the elected candidate from the May 2027 election takes office. It’s the latest leadership position for Blanchett, who already serves on multiple boards across Calhoun and Jackson counties.

Deep Ties to Coastal Communities

Blanchett currently works as a senior communications representative for Formosa Plastics Corporation’s Texas facility in Point Comfort. The company, which manufactures various plastic resins including Formolene® Polypropylene and Polyethylene products, has maintained a significant presence in the coastal community.

Beyond her professional role, Blanchett has established herself as a fixture in local civic leadership. She sits on the board of directors for the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture and serves as a board member for both the Sportsmen’s for Charity Club and United Way of Calhoun County. Her community engagement also extends to the Downtown Waterfront Master Plan Visioning Committee for Port Lavaca and membership in the local Rotary Club.

“As a coastal town with a port, we consider seafarers as…” Blanchett once wrote about Point Comfort’s relationship with maritime workers, highlighting her understanding of the port’s significance to the region’s identity and economy.

What makes Blanchett particularly suited for the Port Authority position? For one, her education background includes a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies from Texas A&M University, potentially offering valuable perspective for an organization engaged in international commerce.

Industry-Community Connection

As the public contact for Formosa Plastics Corporation’s Point Comfort facility, Blanchett has experience navigating the sometimes complex relationship between industry and community interests. She’s listed as the primary public communications representative for the facility located at 201 Formosa Drive.

That experience could prove valuable on the Port Authority board, which must balance commercial, environmental, and community priorities in its governance of port operations. The Calhoun Port Authority oversees facilities crucial to the region’s economic development and industrial activity.

Blanchett’s term will conclude when the at-large commissioner elected in May 2027 qualifies to take office, giving her approximately three years to contribute to the Port Authority’s mission and operations.

The appointment continues Abbott’s pattern of selecting individuals with both professional expertise and community involvement for positions on state and regional boards, particularly those overseeing critical infrastructure and economic development assets.
