Hit-and-Run Near Athens, TX: Search On for Fatal Pickup Driver

Must read

A pedestrian was struck and killed early Sunday morning in a hit-and-run collision near Athens, Texas, leaving local authorities scrambling to locate the driver who fled the scene.

The fatal incident occurred around 7 a.m. in the 4200 block of FM 2709, west of State Highway 19 in Henderson County, where the victim was hit by a pickup truck that immediately left the area, according to authorities who confirmed the death at the scene.

Search Underway for Fleeing Driver

Investigators have narrowed their search to a 2016–2018 model Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that was traveling westbound toward Eustace at the time of the collision. The vehicle likely sustained noticeable damage to its front end or driver’s side during the impact, as revealed by preliminary evidence gathered at the scene.

What makes this case particularly troubling? The driver made no attempt to stop and render aid to the victim, instead choosing to flee — a decision that transforms a tragic accident into a serious criminal matter.

The Texas Department of Public Safety has taken the lead in the investigation and is actively seeking the public’s assistance. “We’re asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who has information about a vehicle matching this description to come forward immediately,” said a DPS spokesperson familiar with the case.

Local residents with information are being urged to contact the Texas DPS at 903-872-5633. Even small details could prove crucial in identifying the driver, authorities emphasized in their public appeal.

The rural stretch of FM 2709 where the incident occurred isn’t known for heavy pedestrian traffic, raising questions about the circumstances that led to the victim being on the roadway during the early morning hours.

Community Impact

This isn’t the first hit-and-run incident to shake the Athens area in recent years, but it’s among the most brazen. The small community west of Athens has been left reeling as news of the fatality spread throughout Henderson County.

“It’s hard to fathom someone hitting another human being and just driving off,” said a nearby resident who frequently travels the same route. “That road can be dangerous, especially around dawn when visibility isn’t great, but there’s no excuse for not stopping.”

Authorities haven’t yet released the identity of the victim, pending notification of family members.

As the search continues, investigators are also checking nearby businesses and residences for surveillance footage that might have captured the vehicle before or after the fatal collision. Time is of the essence, as damage to the suspect vehicle may soon be repaired—potentially destroying valuable evidence.
