The clock is ticking for holiday shoppers and shippers alike. With multiple year-end celebrations approaching, those planning to mail gifts have just days remaining before critical shipping deadlines arrive.
As reported by Sam Kosmas in his recently updated guide, 2025’s holiday calendar features Hanukkah (December 14-22), Christmas (December 25), and Kwanzaa (December 26-January 1) — creating a perfect storm for delivery services already managing peak seasonal volumes.
USPS Deadlines Approaching Fast
The U.S. Postal Service has established December 17 as the cutoff for both Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail shipments within the contiguous United States. Those needing slightly more time can use Priority Mail until December 18, while the premium Priority Mail Express service remains available until December 20.
Residents of Alaska, Hawaii and other non-contiguous territories face tighter timelines, with Ground Advantage packages needing to ship by December 16, according to information from multiple postal sources.
“We’re prepared for the holiday rush, but we can’t control time itself,” is the message carriers seem to be sending as they emphasize these firm deadlines across their communications.
FedEx Options Remain, But Clock is Ticking
Waiting until the last minute? FedEx’s timeline is similarly compressed. The company’s Ground Economy service — typically the most affordable option — must be used by December 15 to ensure Christmas Eve delivery, as outlined in their holiday shipping schedule.
For procrastinators with deeper pockets, FedEx Express Saver shipments can be sent as late as December 19, though this deadline can stretch to December 20 with an additional surcharge. The company’s fastest services remain available through December 23 for truly last-moment gifts.
FedEx has published their complete 2025 holiday operations schedule on their official website, including exceptions and special handling information for time-sensitive deliveries.
UPS Deadlines Vary by Service Level
What about UPS? Their domestic deadlines for Christmas Eve delivery follow a similar pattern, with 3 Day Select packages needing to ship by December 19, while 2nd Day Air remains an option until December 22, according to guidelines published earlier this month.
Those truly cutting it close can utilize UPS Next Day Air as late as December 23. Ground service deadlines, however, vary significantly based on shipping origin and destination.
“Check specific transit times using our calculator,” the company advises on their website, directing customers to ups.com/ctc to determine exact cutoff dates for ground deliveries. The company’s year-end schedule has been finalized with these deadlines in mind.
Planning Ahead Saves Money
Feeling the pressure yet? You should be. While expedited shipping options exist almost until Christmas itself, they come at a premium that increases as the holiday approaches.
Waiting until the final deadlines also introduces risk, as weather disruptions or unexpected volume surges can delay even “guaranteed” deliveries during the holiday season. Multiple sources recommend shipping at least several days before published deadlines when possible.
The bottom line for holiday shippers: The window for economical shipping options is closing rapidly, with premium services soon becoming the only viable option for gifts that absolutely must arrive before December 25.
