How iWatchTexas Empowers Texans to Report Suspicious Activity Safely

Must read

In an age of heightened security concerns, Texas officials are doubling down on a program that puts public vigilance at the center of their safety strategy. The iWatchTexas program, a reporting system that allows residents to flag suspicious activities through multiple platforms, has become a cornerstone of the state’s approach to preventing threats before they materialize.

“It is always better to report something that may be suspicious and have it turn out to be nothing, than to stay silent and have it turn out to be something where you should have spoken up,” said Homeland Security Division Chief Gerald Brown, underscoring the philosophy behind the initiative.

How It Works: From Smartphone to Safety Net

The system allows Texans to report potential criminal, terrorist, or school safety threats through a free mobile app, website (www.iwatchtx.org), or by calling 1-844-643-2251. Most reports take less than five minutes to complete, and all submissions remain confidential, with contact information being optional. Once submitted, law enforcement analysts review each report.

What exactly should Texans be looking out for? The Department of Public Safety provides specific examples: comments about harming others, strangers inquiring about building security, concerning social media posts about potential school attacks, and unauthorized photography of security features. The program also flags unusual requests for sensitive information like blueprints or security plans, and suspicious purchases that could be used for weapons.

Colonel Freeman F. Martin, Texas’ Homeland Security Director, emphasizes that the program serves as a critical intelligence pipeline. “Through iWatchTexas reports, law enforcement can quickly detect and disrupt these types of threats before they materialize,” he noted. “This is not about creating fear—it’s about staying informed, alert and ready to speak up when something doesn’t seem right.”

Beyond Domestic Threats: New Focus on Foreign Interference

The program recently expanded its scope. A new feature now allows Texans to report potential foreign adversary threats, with all such reports routed directly to DPS for vetting. This addition reflects growing concerns about international interference in domestic affairs.

“This new feature helps the department quickly address a wider range of homeland security threats facing our state, making us safer,” officials stated. “It’s important to remember the feature is only good if we use it. So, remember to speak up if you see suspicious behavior or activity—including any signs of intimidation or pressure from a hostile government outside of the United States.”

Sound a bit like neighborhood watch gone digital? That’s essentially the point. Law enforcement officials acknowledge that preparations for crimes, terrorist attacks, and school safety threats are often observed but not reported. The iWatchTexas program aims to close that gap by making reporting as frictionless as possible.

When Not to Use iWatchTexas

There’s an important caveat to the program: it isn’t designed for emergencies. Officials emphasize that in situations requiring immediate response, Texans should still call 911 rather than submitting an app report.

The app is available for both iPhone and Android users through their respective app stores. Officials are actively encouraging all residents to download it now, positioning preparedness as a civic duty rather than an option.

As threats evolve, from school violence to international interference, Texas authorities appear to be betting on an old adage with new technology: many eyes make light work. Whether this crowd-sourced vigilance strikes the right balance between security and suspicion remains to be seen, but for now, the message from officials is clear — when in doubt, report it.
