I-30 Downtown Dallas Closure: Major Weekend Traffic Detours Ahead

Must read

Dallas commuters are facing another major traffic headache this weekend as a critical stretch of I-30 through downtown shuts down completely for construction.

All east and westbound lanes of Interstate 30 between I-35E and I-45/U.S. 75 will close from 10 p.m. Friday, January 30, until 5 a.m. Monday, February 2, weather permitting. The closure is part of the $888 million I-30 Canyon Improvement Project that’s transforming one of the city’s most congested corridors.

Transportation officials have designated Spur 366, better known as Woodall Rodgers Freeway, as the primary detour route. District 7 Councilman Adam Bazaldua didn’t mince words in his warning to constituents, using both his Instagram account and office newsletter to urge residents to “expect significant delays” and avoid unnecessary travel in the area, as noted in local coverage.

Weekend Warriors

This isn’t the first major closure for the ambitious overhaul, but it’s hitting at a particularly inconvenient time for many residents. The weekend shutdown affects the central “Canyon Corridor” section of I-30, which serves as a crucial east-west artery through the heart of Dallas.

While officials plan to reopen the highway before Monday’s rush hour, the exact timing remains uncertain. Fox 4 indicates that the extensive $880 million project will continue causing intermittent disruptions through 2030, as crews work to improve highway transitions and overall traffic flow.

Frustrated by another weekend of detours? You’re not alone. The ongoing construction has particularly impacted South Dallas communities, where residents have increasingly voiced concerns about the cumulative effect of these recurring closures on local businesses and neighborhood accessibility.

Planning Ahead

Transportation officials are advising drivers to plan alternative routes well in advance. The complete shutdown affects all lanes in both directions, making this weekend’s closure more disruptive than some of the partial closures residents have previously navigated.

KERA confirms the closure will extend from I-35E to the I-45/U.S. 75 interchange, effectively cutting off a major portion of downtown Dallas to through traffic for nearly 60 hours.

The I-30 Canyon project represents one of the largest infrastructure investments in the region in recent years. When completed, it promises to reduce congestion, improve safety, and enhance connectivity between downtown and surrounding neighborhoods.

That said, the short-term pain continues to test the patience of Dallas residents and businesses. Weekend warriors planning to traverse downtown might want to reconsider their routes — or better yet, postpone non-essential trips until the roadway reopens Monday morning.
