Jasper, AL Tragedy: Missing 4-Year-Old Found Dead, Loyal Dog Stays Nearby

Must read

The body of 4-year-old Johnathan Everett Boley was found dead approximately two miles from his father’s home in Jasper, Alabama on Friday, with his loyal dog Buck discovered alive nearby.

Walker County Sheriff Nick Smith delivered the devastating news during a somber press conference Friday afternoon, bringing a tragic end to the search that began Wednesday when the boy was reported missing around 11:30 a.m.

“Like so many of you across our community… we’re devastated. We’re just devastated by this news,” said Smith. “Johnathan was an adventurous boy and he loved the outdoors.”

Disappearance and Search

Johnathan was last seen playing near the fence line of his father’s property in the 7000 block of Highway 195, wearing a yellow Mickey Mouse shirt, black pants, and PAW Patrol shoes. His brother witnessed the crucial moment that set the tragedy in motion.

“The indications were that (Johnathan) and his brother were outside playing around the fence line, with a dog,” Sheriff Smith had explained to reporters earlier. “The brother said that the dog and his brother went across the fence line.”

What followed was an intensive multi-day search operation through the rugged terrain surrounding the Boley property. Searchers ultimately located the boy’s body about two miles from home — a significant distance for a child so young to travel.

The discovery of Buck, alive and apparently keeping vigil near Johnathan, adds a heartbreaking dimension to an already tragic story. The loyal dog had seemingly stayed with the child throughout the ordeal.

Complications in the Investigation

Complicating matters during the search were charges brought against Johnathan’s father, Jameson Kyle Boley. He faces counts of unlawful manufacturing of a destructive device and two counts of chemical endangerment of a child — though authorities have emphasized these charges are unrelated to the child’s disappearance.

The presence of explosive devices created significant hurdles for search teams. “The father has been charged. It has nothing to in connection with the missing child, it’s something totally separate, but is still a factor that is hindering our search,” Smith had stated Wednesday. “We have a search warrant for the property that they are having to take care of some explosive devices before we can get inside the residence and do a thorough search.”

How did these dangerous conditions impact the search operation? Authorities had to clear the property of potential explosive hazards before conducting a comprehensive search of the residence and surrounding areas, potentially delaying critical early search efforts.

Authorities have not yet released information about the cause of death or additional circumstances surrounding the tragedy. The investigation remains ongoing as the community grapples with the loss of a child described by those who knew him as spirited and full of adventure.

As the sun set over Walker County Friday evening, the flags that had marked search zones were replaced by makeshift memorials — tributes to a little boy’s life cut tragically short, and to the faithful companion who refused to leave his side.
