LYNX Platform: How AI is Opening Defense Contracts to Small Business

Must read

The Department of War unveiled a new digital platform Tuesday aimed at helping businesses navigate the complex world of defense contracting, potentially opening doors for thousands of small and non-traditional companies seeking government contracts.

LYNX, launched on January 30, 2026, represents the department’s latest effort to diversify its supplier base at a time when technological innovation and supply chain resilience have become critical national security priorities. “LYNX turns readiness into action,” said Assistant Secretary of War for Industrial Base Policy Michael Cadenazzi in a statement announcing the initiative.

The platform, accessible at lynxconnect.io, aims to tackle a persistent challenge in defense procurement: how to bring fresh talent and new capabilities into a notoriously complex market. For many small businesses, the labyrinth of requirements, certifications, and procurement processes has historically presented formidable barriers to entry.

Breaking Down Barriers

What makes LYNX different from previous attempts to streamline defense contracting? According to officials, the platform leverages artificial intelligence and machine learning to create customized roadmaps for businesses, matching their capabilities with defense needs while providing assessment tools and training resources.

“LYNX reflects OSBP’s commitment to reducing barriers to entry and expanding participation across the defense industrial base,” said James Mismash, Director of Small Business Programs, who emphasized the platform’s role in helping companies present their capabilities and connect with opportunities aligned to their mission.

The Office of Small Business Programs, which spearheaded the development of LYNX, has positioned the platform as particularly valuable for new entrants, small businesses, non-traditional suppliers, and growing defense contractors looking to expand their footprint in the defense sector.

Defense industry analysts have long noted that the Pentagon’s traditional procurement processes often favor established contractors with decades of experience navigating federal requirements. That’s where LYNX hopes to make a difference.

AI-Powered Matchmaking

Among the platform’s key features are AI-informed roadmaps that guide businesses through the complex requirements of defense contracting. Companies can create detailed profiles showcasing their capabilities, undergo readiness assessments, and access partner matching services to find complementary businesses for collaborative opportunities.

The DoW has also integrated training resources directly into the platform, offering specialized guidance on navigating defense-specific requirements and regulations.

For the Department of War, the benefits could be substantial. By broadening its supplier base, the department aims to access cutting-edge technologies and innovative solutions that might otherwise remain outside its reach. The move comes as defense officials have increasingly expressed concern about concentration risks in the industrial base and the need for greater resilience in supply chains.

Registration for businesses interested in joining LYNX is now open. Whether the platform will succeed where previous initiatives have struggled remains to be seen, but for thousands of small businesses eyeing defense contracts, it represents a potentially valuable new entry point into one of the government’s largest procurement ecosystems.
