MacKenzie Scott Donates Record $7.1 Billion to Nonprofits in 2025

In a staggering display of philanthropy, MacKenzie Scott has more than doubled her charitable giving this year, donating $7.1 billion to nonprofits in 2025. The figure marks a dramatic increase from the $2.6 billion she donated in 2024, cementing her status as one of America’s most prolific philanthropists.

The billionaire ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has now given away a total of $26.3 billion since 2019, according to a recent announcement on her philanthropic activities. This year’s donations include over $700 million specifically directed to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), continuing her focus on educational equity and opportunity.

A Different Kind of Giving

What sets Scott apart in the world of big-dollar philanthropy isn’t just the eye-popping amounts, but her approach. Unlike most major donors, Scott doesn’t require applications or mandate that organizations report back on how they used her money. This no-strings-attached method has been praised by many nonprofit leaders for trusting organizations to determine their own priorities.

“Generosity and kindness engage the same pleasure centers in the brain as sex, food, and receiving gifts, and they improve our health and long-term happiness as well,” Scott wrote in a statement accompanying her donation disclosure. She described her multi-billion-dollar contributions as “a vanishingly tiny fraction of the personal expressions of care being shared into communities this year,” highlighting her belief that kindness extends beyond monetary giving.

Is Scott setting a new standard for billionaire philanthropy? Many experts think so, particularly as she continues to fulfill the commitment she made when signing the Giving Pledge in 2019 — promising to donate the majority of her wealth during her lifetime or in her will.

Beyond Traditional Philanthropy

Scott’s giving extends beyond direct donations. She has increasingly focused on what she calls “mission-aligned investments” that seek social impact alongside financial returns. In one notable example, she invested in a company founded by her former college roommate that provides loans to students who struggle to secure traditional bank financing.

“There are many ways to influence how we move through the world, and where we land,” Scott noted, suggesting that her approach to wealth redistribution continues to evolve and expand beyond conventional philanthropy models.

Despite her enormous giving, Scott remains incredibly wealthy. She’s estimated to be worth approximately $33 billion, largely stemming from her 4% stake in Amazon received during her divorce from Jeff Bezos.

Giving Pledge Under Scrutiny

Scott’s aggressive donation pace stands in stark contrast to some of her fellow Giving Pledge signatories. The pledge, founded by Bill Gates, Melinda French Gates, and Warren Buffett, has faced increasing criticism for potentially functioning more as a public relations vehicle than a genuine mechanism for addressing wealth inequality.

Some high-profile billionaires who signed the pledge — including Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg — have been accused of not living up to their commitments or lacking transparency in their giving. Melinda French Gates herself recently addressed this issue in stark terms, stating in a Wired interview: “Have they given enough? No.”

That said, Scott appears determined to fulfill her pledge at an accelerating pace, with her 2025 donations representing over 20% of her current estimated net worth.

Through her actions rather than words, Scott continues to emphasize what she described in her statement: “The peace-fostering byproducts of one unexpected act of kindness toward a stranger of different background or beliefs might inspire a beneficial chain reaction that goes on for years. Respect, understanding, insight, empathy, forgiveness, inspiration – all of these are meaningful contributions to others.”
