The search for missing 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie — mother of Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie — has intensified as law enforcement confirmed they’re working a significant lead just miles from her Tucson home.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed Tuesday that investigators are “actively working a lead” at a site approximately two miles from Guthrie’s Catalina Foothills residence. “The scene is connected to the Guthrie case,” Nanos stated, adding that he “cannot say anything else” at this time.
Detention and Search Warrant
In what could be a significant breakthrough, at least one person has been detained in connection with the investigation. A search warrant was reportedly served, according to a local law enforcement source who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly about the ongoing case.
The FBI previously described the suspect as male, approximately 5’9″ – 5’10” tall with an average build, wearing a black 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack at the time of the abduction. Authorities haven’t confirmed if the detained individual matches this description.
What began as a missing person report has evolved into a high-profile abduction case that’s captured national attention. Guthrie was taken from her home in the early morning hours of February 1, 2026, with the FBI releasing disturbing images of an armed masked suspect tampering with security cameras at the residence.
Evidence Trail
Sheriff Nanos has addressed some confusion regarding evidence found near the scene. “We found the first pair [of gloves], I think, was a search team that went out. FBI deputies, everybody about 2 miles away,” he explained in a recent statement. “There’s been some reporting that there was a glove in that that is, no, — there’s never glove [inside the residence].”
The location of these gloves—roughly two miles from Guthrie’s home—appears to correspond with the current search area, though officials haven’t explicitly connected these pieces of evidence.
For the tight-knit Catalina Foothills community, the abduction has shattered their sense of security. Neighbors have organized their own search parties while maintaining a vigil outside the Guthrie home.
Is this latest development the breakthrough investigators have been waiting for? Authorities remain tight-lipped about specifics, likely to protect the integrity of their investigation.
The case has drawn national media attention not only due to the connection to Savannah Guthrie but also because of the brazen nature of the crime—an armed intruder entering an elderly woman’s home in what’s considered a safe, affluent neighborhood.
As the investigation continues, the Guthrie family has requested privacy during this difficult time. Meanwhile, law enforcement officials urge anyone with information about Nancy Guthrie’s whereabouts to contact the FBI or Pima County Sheriff’s Department immediately.
