A devastating Russian missile strike on Sumy, Ukraine, during Palm Sunday killed at least 34 people and injured over 100 others in one of the deadliest attacks on the northeastern city.
The attack targeted civilian infrastructure, including multiple buildings at Sumy State University’s Congress Center, causing significant structural damage and casualties. Among the dead were two children, with reports indicating at least 117 people were wounded in the strike.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack, stating, “Talks have never stopped ballistic missiles and air bombs. We need the kind of attitude towards Russia that a terrorist deserves.”
The assault prompted swift international backlash, with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasizing Russia’s continued aggression. “Such Russian attacks demonstrate the state of Russia’s alleged willingness for peace. Instead, we see that Russia is relentlessly continuing its war of aggression against Ukraine,” Scholz said.
International leaders joined in condemning the attack, with French President Emmanuel Macron pointing to Russia’s sole responsibility for the ongoing conflict. “Everyone knows: This war was initiated by Russia alone. And today, it is clear that Russia alone chooses to continue it — with blatant disregard for human lives, international law, and the diplomatic efforts of President Trump,” Macron stated.
Zelensky called for increased global pressure on Russia, emphasizing that “A tough reaction from the world is needed. The United States, Europe, everyone who wants an end to this war and murders. Russia wants exactly this kind of terror and is dragging out this war. Without pressure on the aggressor, peace is impossible.”
The attack on Sumy represents one of the deadliest strikes on the city since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, highlighting the ongoing threat to civilian populations in Ukraine’s urban centers.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen echoed calls for immediate action, stating that “Strong measures are urgently needed to enforce a ceasefire.” The international community continues to grapple with mounting pressure to respond to Russia’s escalating attacks on civilian targets.
