New Post Oak Ridge State Park Expands Outdoor Recreation in Texas

Must read

Texas is doubling down on its outdoor recreation offerings with a significant new addition to its state park system, as Governor Greg Abbott recently touted plans for the newly established Post Oak Ridge State Park during a visit to Lampasas County.

“I want to thank the voters for passing the constitutional amendment that allowed not just the creation of this park, but allows us to be able to create parks like this for many years going forward,” Abbott remarked during his appearance, highlighting the role of public support in expanding Texas’ natural spaces.

The new 3,000-plus-acre park, situated along the Colorado River spanning both Burnet and Lampasas counties, represents one of the first major developments funded by the $1 billion Centennial Parks Conservation Fund — a program established through Proposition 14, which Texas voters approved as a constitutional amendment. The fund aims to support the creation and enhancement of state parks across the Lone Star State for generations to come.

What makes Post Oak Ridge particularly notable? Its strategic location directly across from the already popular Colorado Bend State Park positions it as a complementary destination rather than a competitor in the region’s outdoor recreation landscape.

“The idea is to make it a complement to Colorado Bend,” rather than a competitor, said Sloan, as quoted by the Lampasas Dispatch Record.

Phased Development Approach

Nature enthusiasts won’t have to wait too long to explore this new wilderness. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, which purchased the property in January 2025, has outlined an ambitious development timeline. Officials expect to offer day passes by fall 2026, with the park partially opening for day-use with basic facilities approximately 18 months after purchase.

Full development, including comprehensive roads, utilities, and facilities, is projected within 48 months. By 2027, visitors should be able to enjoy complete access to the park, located just 15 miles from the Lampasas city limits.

The development process hasn’t been without public input. A community meeting was scheduled for January 15 at the Lampasas County Annex, allowing local residents to weigh in on plans for the new recreational space.

Natural Features

Post Oak Ridge State Park will showcase some of Central Texas’ most distinctive landscapes. Characterized by steep river bluffs, spring-fed creeks, and rolling hills, the park sits north of Lake Buchanan in the scenic Highland Lakes area, as noted by the Daily Tribune.

The development comes at a crucial time for outdoor recreation in Central Texas. With existing parks often reaching capacity during peak seasons, Post Oak Ridge aims to alleviate overcrowding while providing new opportunities for hiking, camping, and nature observation.

State officials view the park as an important addition to Texas’ outdoor recreation infrastructure. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department confirms that Post Oak Ridge represents one of the first tangible outcomes of the Centennial Parks Conservation Fund, demonstrating how interest generated from the $1 billion endowment can be translated into new public lands.

For Central Texans and visitors alike, the countdown has begun to explore what promises to be one of the state’s newest natural treasures — a testament to Texas’ commitment to preserving its wild spaces for future generations.
