North Texas School Closures: Icy Weather Shuts Down Districts & Colleges

Must read

Winter’s icy grip has forced schools across North Texas to slam their doors shut as dangerous freezing temperatures continue to threaten the region. Multiple school districts announced closures extending through midweek, disrupting schedules but prioritizing safety amid harsh conditions.

Denton, Lewisville, and Little Elm Independent School Districts have all announced they will remain closed on Wednesday due to the winter weather system that’s settled over the area, according to local news outlets.

The closures follow a broader pattern of shutdowns across the region. Liberty ISD made the decision to close on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, citing “dangerous freezing temperatures” as the primary concern. The district’s superintendent didn’t mince words about the decision: “Could we maybe make school work? Possibly. But my job as Superintendent is to work with our School Board and community to look out for our kids, staff, and families,” the official stated in a community message.

Why extend closures when roads might be passable? The superintendent pointed to practical concerns beyond just icy streets.

“We have staff who commute from all over the region and kids on buses for close to an hour in some cases…. Asking everyone to be out in these conditions for one more day of school just isn’t worth the risk,” the statement continued.

Higher Education Also Affected

The impact hasn’t been limited to K-12 education. Colleges across North Texas have either canceled in-person classes entirely or shifted to online learning for January 26-27, as reported by multiple sources. This coordinated response highlights the severity of the weather system moving through the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

UME Preparatory Academy took similar precautions, closing all schools and offices on Tuesday. The academy announced the closure due to “continuing inclement weather conditions” that made travel potentially hazardous.

For Lewisville ISD, the concerns extended into midweek. “Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our students and staff, LISD campuses and facilities will continue to be closed Wednesday, Jan…” the district explained in their announcement.

These decisions haven’t come without complications for families. Liberty ISD’s superintendent acknowledged the disruption: “I know this means families have to make arrangements, and my hope is that this advanced notice will give you all time to do that.”

As temperatures remain below freezing across much of North Texas, district officials continue monitoring forecasts to determine when normal operations can safely resume. For now, thousands of students are enjoying an unexpected extension to their weekend — while parents scramble to adjust work schedules and childcare arrangements.

The message from school leadership seems consistent across districts: better a day of missed instruction than risking student and staff safety on icy roads and in bitter cold. As one administrator put it, “Let’s all take care of each other and hope all of Panther Nation stays warm and safe.”
