Off-Duty Deputy Shoots Patron at Austin’s Club Rodeo: What Happened?

Must read

An off-duty Travis County sheriff’s deputy shot a patron at Club Rodeo in Austin early Sunday morning, authorities confirmed. The shooting occurred around 2 a.m. when the deputy, who was working security at the northeast Austin club, reportedly encountered an “aggressive” individual.

The Austin Police Department said the confrontation escalated quickly at the nightclub located at 9515 North Lamar Boulevard. According to preliminary investigations, the deputy fired at least one shot, striking the person who was then transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

What happened that night

Details remain murky about what exactly triggered the confrontation. APD officers responded to the scene shortly after 2 a.m. following reports of shots fired. When they arrived, they found the off-duty deputy had already detained the wounded individual.

Club Rodeo, a popular nightspot in northeast Austin, was reportedly at capacity when the incident occurred. Witnesses described a chaotic scene with patrons rushing toward exits after hearing gunfire.

“Everyone just started running,” one club-goer told reporters at the scene. “We didn’t know what was happening, just that there were shots.”

The Travis County Sheriff’s Office has placed the deputy on administrative leave pending investigation — standard protocol in officer-involved shootings. They’ve declined to release the deputy’s name but confirmed they have been with the department for three years.

Questions about use of force

Was this shooting justified? That’s the question investigators are now trying to answer as they review security footage and interview witnesses who were present during the altercation.

The Austin Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit is handling the case alongside the Travis County District Attorney’s Office. Both agencies confirmed they’re treating this as a critical incident investigation.

“We take any use of force, especially one involving a firearm, extremely seriously,” said APD spokesperson Detective Julia Montoya. “Our investigators will be thorough in determining exactly what led to this shooting.”

The injured individual, whose identity has not yet been released, remains hospitalized in stable condition. Authorities indicated they’re waiting until formal charges are filed before releasing more information about the person’s background or what may have prompted the aggressive behavior.

Not an isolated incident

This incident marks the third shooting involving law enforcement in the Austin area this year. In February, an APD officer fired at a suspect during a traffic stop, and in March, a Texas DPS trooper discharged their weapon during a pursuit that ended in north Austin.

Club Rodeo has had its share of security concerns in the past. County records show at least seven police calls to the establishment in the past year for disturbances, though none had previously resulted in gunfire.

The club’s management issued a brief statement Monday: “We’re cooperating fully with investigators and are conducting our own internal review of security protocols. The safety of our patrons remains our highest priority.”

Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward. “Even small details could be important to piecing together exactly what happened,” Detective Montoya explained.

For now, the club remains open, though with heightened security measures. Meanwhile, the deputy at the center of the investigation faces an uncertain future as investigators work to determine whether the use of deadly force was justified in what began as an ordinary night at a popular Austin nightclub.
