Pat Finn, Beloved ‘The Middle’ Actor and Comedian, Dies at 60

Must read

Actor and comedian Pat Finn, best known for his recurring role as Bill Norwood on the ABC sitcom “The Middle,” has died at age 60 following a battle with cancer.

Finn, whose affable screen presence made him a reliable character actor across several decades of television, passed away on December 23, according to a statement from his family released through Connected Communications, LLC.

A Familiar Face on Hit Shows

Television viewers likely recognized Finn from his numerous appearances on popular series throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Beyond his eight-year run on “The Middle,” he had recurring roles on “Murphy Brown,” “3rd Rock from the Sun,” and “Ed,” while making memorable guest appearances as Dr. Roger on “Friends” and Joe Mayo on “Seinfeld,” among others, as noted by industry sources.

The Illinois native brought a distinctive midwestern sensibility to his work. Raised in Wilmette, Finn graduated from Marquette University before honing his comedic skills at Chicago’s legendary Second City and iO Theater. He later toured with the Second City Touring Company and performed with the iO comedy troupe “Beer Shark Mice,” establishing deep roots in the improv community that would influence his acting career for years to come.

How did he balance performing with teaching? In recent years, Finn had been passing along his improv expertise as an adjunct professor at both the University of Colorado and his alma mater, Marquette University, where he taught “Improv for Strategic Communication,” sharing decades of professional knowledge with a new generation of performers.

A Battle with Cancer

Finn’s health struggles began in 2022 when he was diagnosed with bladder cancer. Though he initially went into remission after treatment, the disease later returned and metastasized, according to family statements.

“He was a warrior in every sense of the word,” noted a release from Connected Communications, LLC, reflecting on Finn’s fight against the illness that ultimately claimed his life.

The character actor leaves behind a close-knit family, including his wife Donna (Donna Crowley), children Cassidy, Caitlin and Ryan, his parents Leo and Betty, and siblings Michelle, Tracy, Tom, Kevin and Katie, all of whom were mentioned in the family’s statement.

Finn’s career spanned decades of television comedy, but those who worked with him often spoke of his generosity as a scene partner and his commitment to the craft of improvisation. That spirit of collaboration remained evident in his later teaching work, where he continued sharing the techniques that had served him throughout his entertainment career.

For fans of “The Middle,” where Finn appeared in 21 episodes across the show’s nine-season run, his portrayal of the Hecks’ neighbor Bill Norwood represented the kind of supporting character that gives sitcoms their lived-in feel—a testament to how even limited screen time could showcase his natural comedic talents.
